what are the three types of fetal shunts?

1. foramen Ovale 2. dunctus arteoviosus 3. ductus venosus/venosum

what are the three major venous channels ?

1. superior vena cava 2. inferior vena cava 3. coronary sinus

how many shunts are there in the fetal circulation ?

3

what forms when the foramen ovale doesn't close? what percentage of the population does this happen to?

Atrial Septal Defect. 25%

What does the Ductus Arteriosus degenerate and become 3 weeks after birth?

a ligament known as Ligamentum Arteriosum, which is attached to the pulmonary trunk and sling the aortic arch.

Where is the Umbilical Artery found? what is it?

a paired artery ( one for each side of the body) that is found in the abdominal and pelvic regions.

What does the Ductus Venosus do? what does it become after birth?

allow oxygenated blood from the placenta to bypass the liver; connects the umbilical vein to the inferior vena cava. forms the ligamentum venosum after birth

What does the Ductus Arteriosus do?

connect the pulmonary artery and its branches to the arch of the aorta, which then allow blood to flow to the rest of the fetus ( from the pulmonary trunk)

what venous channel collects deoxygenated blood from the heart and all three of the other venous channels?

coronary sinus (to the right atrium)

What does the Umbilical Artery Do?

extends into the umbilical cord and transports deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta.

what venous channel does blood drain from the lower extremities, pelvis, abdomen and most of the thorax?

inferior vena cava

where is the tricuspid valve located intrauterine and what does it do?

present between right atrium and right ventricle. accepts blood from right atrium and doesn't allow blood flow back into right atrium

what does the foramen ovale do with the blood from the right atrium?

shunt it because there is no lung function in intrauterine life. when this (FORAMEN OVALE) closes at birth this location is marked by a shallow depression called FOSSA OVALIS

what venous channel does blood drain from the brain, head, and neck?

superior vena cava

what does the foramen Ovale connect?

the right atrium to the left atrium via an opening in the interatrial septum

What does the Umbilical vein do?

transport oxygenated blood from the placenta to the growing fetus.
