The Priming theory

The Priming theory states that the human brain can be primed to notice things that it ordinarily would completely overlook. Soft Power

Soft Power is a concept to describe the ability to attract and co-opt rather than by coercion (hard power), using force or giving money as a means of persuasion. Soft Power is the ability to shape the preferences of others through appeal and attraction. A defining feature of soft power is that it is non coercive, the currency of soft power is culture, political values, and foreign policies. McCain-Feingold Act 2002

The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 or the McCain-Feingold Act, is a US federal law that amended the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, which regulates the financing of political campaigns. Bread and Roses strike

Suez Crisis

"AKA second Arab-Israel war. An invasion of Egypt in 1956 by Israel, UK, and France. Knights of Labor

Bardon de Montesquieu

(1689-1755) Enlightenment thinker from France who wrote a book called, The Spirit of the Laws in 1748. Montesquieu describes what he considers to be the best government. He states that government should divide itself according to its powers, creating a Judicial, Legislative, and Executive branch. Montesquieu explained that under this system each branch would Check and Balance the others, which would help protect people's liberty.

Great Compromise

1787; This compromise was between the large (Virginia) and small (New Jersey) states in the colonies. The Great Compromise resolved that there would be representation by population in the House of Representatives, and equal representation would exist in the Senate. Each state, regardless of size, would have 2 senators. All tax bills and revenues would originate in the House. This compromise combined the needs of both large and small states and formed a fair and sensible resolution to their problems.

1819--New Hampshire had attempted to take over Dartmouth College by revising its colonial charter. The Court ruled that the charter was protected under the contract clause of the U. S. Constitution; upholds the sanctity of contracts.

Monroe Doctrine

1823 - Declared that Europe should not interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere and that any attempt at interference by a European power would be seen as a threat to the U.S. It also declared that a New World colony which has gained independence may not be recolonized by Europe. (It was written at a time when many South American nations were gaining independence). Only England, in particular George Canning, supported the Monroe Doctrine. Mostly just a show of nationalism, the doctrine had no major impact until later in the 1800s.

Wilmot Proviso

A 1919 decision upholding the conviction of a socialist who had urged young men to resist the draft during World War I. Justice Holmes declared that government can limit speech if the speech provokes a "clear and present danger" of substantive evils.

A 1948 statement in which the United Nations declared that all human beings have rights to life, liberty, and security.

Texas v. Johnson

A 1989 case in which the Supreme Court struck down a law banning the burning of the American flag on the grounds that such action was symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment.

A standing committee of the House of Representatives that provides special rules under which specific bills can be debated (time of debate), amended, and considered by the house.

Great Wall of China

A stone wall extending for fifteen hundred miles across northern China. Built to defend the Chinese border in ancient times. Today it has become a favorite destination for visitors to the country.

Smith v. Allwright

A supreme court case in 1944 that ruled that it was unconstitutional to deny membership in political parties to African Americans as a way of excluding them from voting in primaries.

War of 1812

A war between the U.S. and Great Britain caused by American outrage over the impressment of American sailors by the British, the British seizure of American ships, and British aid to the Indians attacking the Americans on the western frontier. Also, a war against Britain gave the U.S. an excuse to seize the British northwest posts and to annex Florida from Britain's ally Spain, and possibly even to seize Canada from Britain. The War Hawks (young westerners led by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun) argued for war in Congress. The war involved several sea battles and frontier skirmishes. U.S. troops led by Andrew Jackson seized Florida and at one point the British managed to invade and burn Washington, D.C. The Treaty of Ghent (December 1814) restored the status quo and required the U.S. to give back Florida. The CNN effect

The CNN effect is a theory in political science and media studies that postulates that the development of the popular 24-hour international television news channel known as Cable News Network, or CNN had a major impact on the conduct of states foreign policy in the late Cold War period and that CNN and its subsequent industry competitors have had a similar impact in the post Cold War era. The Fulbright Program
