Diarthrotic / Synovial Joints Functions: (3)

1) Specialized for movement 2) Complex joint bound by joint capsule (or *ARTICULAR CAPSULE* = "pocket") • Articular Capsule = FIBROUS MEMBRANE + SYNOVIAL MEMBRANE • Inside the joint capsule is a JOINT CAVITY containing SYNOVIAL FLUID − Synovial Fluid provides lubrication − Nourishes the chondrocytes − Acts as a shock absorber 3) Articular cartilage (hyaline) covers the ends of the bones Richly supplied w/ sensory nerves - nerve endings in joints.

Synarthrotic Joints (2) & definitions

1) Suture - joins the bones of the *SKULL* 2) Gomphosis - joins the *TEETH* in the jaw

Amphiarthrotic Joints (2) & definitions

1) Syndesmosis - joins tibula & fibula, ulna & radius 2) Symphysis - a connection by a pad of fibrous cartilage. ALL DISC JOINTS are slightly movable. - b/w right & left pubis bones of pelvis - b/w adjacent vertebral bodies (discs)

Menisci

articular discs

Diarthrotic Joints *AKA?*

AKA Synovial Joints

Functional Classification of Joints: (3) & their mobility

classified based on amount of movement. 1) Synarthrotic - immovable 2) Amphiarthrotic - slightly movable 3) Diarthrotic - freely movable; MOST MOVABLE . Common in appendicular skeleton (all synovial joints)

Ligaments

connects bone to bone (dense regular CT)

Bursa

small pocket filled w/ synovial fluid formed where a tendon or ligament rubs against other tissue.
