And I am- and then again, I am not." "Now, there are two me's, the me who is the individual and the me who is part of a family of four, a family of four in which, in a small way, I am left out."

Purpose (The Name is Mine)

Exploring ex: In paragraph 6 when she asks, "What's in a name?" alluding to Romeo and Juliet, as well as exploring what a name really means. She says, "...I wanted to communicate to him that mine meant something special to me..." She wants people to understand her decision. Sharing ex: She is sharing her experience with others, for people who might be considering changing their names. Uses her own story as an example. Also acknowledges that are some consequences, by saying, "But nowadays I think the only simple decisions are whether to have grilled cheese or tuna for lunch."

Tone (Cut)

Informal word choice is simple: "I walked into the gymnasium; there was a piece of paper TACKED to the bulletin board" sentence structure is simple: see structure card very conversational, used I: "I remember it as if I were still standing there in the gym."

NY Times readers, especially women in their 30s, women who are married or considering changing their name

Several anecdote. Uses a lot of informal simplistic sentences ex: "I remember the last time I cried." "I had not known the cut was coming that day. I stood and stared at the list."

Purpose (Westbury Court)

Showing how experience can shape your life. The fire took away her innocence "I had been so wrapped up in the made-up drama of a world where..." "Every day on my way back from school, I hurried pas the flowers and candles piled in front of the spit where the Nigerian, whose name I don't know had been murdered. Still I never thought I was living in a violent place." alludes to Wizard of Oz

Simple sentences "I was watching television one afternoon when the fire began." Then become complex- proving her loss of innocence "The apartment across the hall stayed empty for a long time, and whenever I walked past it, a piece of its inner skeleton would squeak, and occasionally burnt wood...."

Purpose (Cut)

To prove men that are cut from teams in their adolescence, become super achievers later in life. ex: "I know that my ambition has been enormous ever since then..." Bob Greene says about his own experience getting cut. "It seems obvious to me now that being cut was what started me in determining that my success would always be based on my own abilities, and not someone else's perceptions."
