Genesis 3:14-15 So the Lord God said to the serpent, "because you have done this, cursed are you above all life stock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

God only tells a snake and the ground they are cursed (but not the man or woman) - This puts the snake outside of remediation of coming back to like it was before (clever, could talk, etc). Now it will crawl on its belly and eat dust (self degration and self humiliation - no longer has any superiority before the animals). Offspring of the woman but doesn't say the offspring of the serpent. - In addition the seed of the snake and the seed of the woman (normally it is the seed of the man is addressed). - Christ would rise from the dead so the wound was not mortal but the serpent would be defeated. (Not necessarily explain by life in early Israel)

Genesis 3:16-17 To the woman he said, "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you. Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it."

Pains - same word that applies to the man in verse 17 (painful toil) - looks like he will make your conception very painful (in the Hebrew) - Could also mean the woman has to divide her time between conceiving and having children and a lot of work for the man to be able to eat - Having many children was a value in early Israel (to take care of you in your older age and provide the work that needs to be done in the farm in economy) Desire for man (husband doesn't have a specific word) and he will rule over you - desire (teshuqah) - not romantic desire: The desire to have power and control (desire for her will be to exerted instead of his will so that harmony between the two is lost) - Rule over you: simple reality of a patriarchal society that existed (not the way God wants but the way life will be)

Genesis 3:17-19 To Adam he said, "because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, you must not eat from it, curse is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taking; for dust you are into dust you all return."

The ground is cursed - needs to be cleared in order to plant (not God's ideal will but now an impediment with the harmonious relationship the man had with the ground). - Picture of the hard labor that must be done Emphasizes the equal responsibility between the man and the woman - they had a choice and this is the result that comes from it.
