When analyzing weather patterns like the one in the image above, geographers are studying __________.

Meteorology

If geography is all about studying where things happen and why they happen there, how is meteorology a part of geography? In a short paragraph, define meteorology. Explain how meteorology is about studying geography's key questions, "where?" and "why there?"

Meteorology is defined as the study of the atmosphere, especially weather and climate. It is important to meteorology because it includes where storms usually occur, how they form, and what direction storms typically are going to go. Systems, how geographic systems and weather interact. And climate, which is the study of atmospheric conditions and weather over a very long period of time.

Which of the following statements about the geographic theme of region is false?

Giving an address, such as "1000 Elysian Park Avenue, Los Angeles, CA," is an example of describing the __________ of a place.

Absolute Location

Though it experiences freezing temperatures, much of Antarctica is considered a desert because it shares a key quality in common with other deserts: like all deserts, it has __________.

An average less than 10 inches of precipitation each year

A meteorologist __________.

Analyzes weather patterns and predicts weather events

Which of the following is not an example of human-environment interaction?

Antarctic lands not being visited or affected by humans

Which of the following statements about geographers' perceptions and perspectives is false?

Geographers avoid looking at the world with different perspectives

Regions are changing constantly. When two people group places together into a region, they might do it differently. What region of the United States do you live in? In a short paragraph, describe your region and write about three distinguishing characteristics it possesses.

I live in the Midwestern Region. The states in the Midwestern Region are North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Some fun facts about the Midwestern Region are that the area around Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma is known as tornado alley because this area has more tornadoes than anywhere else in the country. Summers in the Midwest are hot and humid; winters can be long cold and gray, especially in the northern Midwest. Many people still live in small towns in the Midwest. The largest cities in the Midwest include Chicago, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, and Cincinnati.

These two images show humid tropical and humid continental climate zones. Each climate zone has a different temperature and experiences different types of seasons. In a short paragraph, choose one of these two zones and explain why it is more appealing to you. Which of these zones would you rather live in?

I would chose humid tropical climate because I like hot and humid summers. It makes a great time to go swimming a lot! This kind of climate tends to be located at or near coastal locations, which is an aspect that I found crucial when deciding where to live. I would like to be outside being active or just swimming and tanning. If I'm outside I would love the tropical humid temperature.

Which of the following lists correctly orders the Earth's layers from its innermost layer to its outermost layer?

Which of the following is not an example of a study within human geography?

Landforms and natural environments

Cartography is the art of designing __________.

Maps

Geographers should learn to view the world from different __________ to organize and categorize it.

Perspective

Which of the six essential elements of geography helps us better understand physical and cultural similarities and differences around the world?

Places and Region

In a short paragraph, explain the basics of the theory of plate tectonics. What does continental drift tell us about what happened to these plates in the past?

Plate tectonics describes the movement of very large chunks of land underneath the ground. The continents have moved around due to the plates below us moving, which is caused by the internal flow of gasses and molten metal underneath us.

A physical geographer would most likely study all of the following subjects except __________.

Political Systems

"The Centennial High School parking lot is five blocks down from the softball field." These directions are an example of describing a place by giving its __________ location.

Relative

Geographers use maps, satellite images, and photographs to organize the world in a(n) __________ context.

Spatial

In your own words, describe what geography is all about. Write a short paragraph that explains what it means to study geography. Give two examples of things you might study as a geographer. (Hint: Think about the five themes and six essential elements of geography.)

To me geography is all about the study of the lands, and phenomena of the Earth and Planets. For example, as a geographer you might study places around the world, and you might study how certain places makes it different from other places.

A geographer's interpretation of events, people, and places is influenced by perceptions and perspective.

True

Maps, satellite images, and photographs help geographers study spatial relationships between people and the environment.

True

What does it mean to talk about "place"? When geographers study place, they're looking at what a certain spot is like. What could you find there? Why is it appealing? What characteristics does it have? In a short paragraph, show that you understand place by describing one of your favorite spots to visit. What kind of place is it?

When someone is talking about "place", they are usually talking about a specific location that they find interesting. For example, when someone is talking about the Washington Monument, I could find the monument as a piece of American history. It is appealing because it symbolizes the time for the nation to become a powerful nation; the Washington Monument took a long time to complete because it was extremely delicate. By the time it was completed, it was the tallest building in the world from 1884 to 1889.

Geographers use two key questions every day. When using these two key questions to study the migration of birds, a geographer would ask "where are the birds going?" and "__________?"

Why are they going there

In this lesson, we identified many uses of geography. One example is urban planning. How would geography be useful in helping to plan the future of a community? Give your response in the form of a short paragraph.

Geography would be beneficial in urban planning because it helps the builders determine where certain public facilities, transportation, and important buildings would be located. Surveyors not only measure the distance between two points but also accurately measure elevation. This is extremely important for architects and engineers when they're designing and planning everything.

A researcher is studying how the logging industry has affected the ecosystem of the rainforest. Which of the five themes of geography is the researcher most likely studying?

Human Environment Interaction

In which of the six essential elements of geography would you study instances of cooperation and conflict in populations?

Human Systems

Migration and interdependence are aspects of which of the six essential elements of geography?

Human Systems

Our environments can change human behavior. Describe some ways that environment changes the choices we make. What does the connection between humans and environment have to do with the study of geography?

Humans change their behaviors to adapt to their surroundings in many ways. Humans adapt by building places that fit the climate and landscape they live in. The environment also has a significant impact transportation, economy, the types of activities humans participate in, and even communication methods. The way that humans interact and relate to their environment helps geographers understand the unique qualities of a place and helps humans interpret the past, understand the present, and prepare for the future.

A researcher is going to Hawaii to study Japanese immigration to the United States. Which of the five themes of geography would the researcher most likely use?

Movement

Every person has a mental map of the world around them. In a short paragraph, describe your mental map of your neighborhood by describing two locations that are important to you. How do you know how to get to these two locations? Where are they in relation to each other?

My mental map is small because I know very little of my neighbors. One place that is very important to me is my job because I got to know a lot of my coworkers and I am great friends with them. I know how to get to my job by my heart because I go there so often. Another place that means a lot to me is my school. This is a very important place to me because it is where I make most of my memories at with my friends and learn more for my future. I know how to get there because it is my school and I go to it 5 days a week for about 10 months a year. The two places are very close to each other and are less than a mile apart.

Geographers seek to answer two key questions when they study the world: "where?" and "why there?" A geographer can study any process taking place in the world today by answering these questions. In a short paragraph, identify one of your interests (maybe it's sports, games, or another hobby). How could you answer geography's two key questions when studying this interest?

One of my interests is Cross Country. Cross Country isn't a very well known sport like baseball or football. Cross country takes place normally on a golf course. Cross Country normally takes place on a golf course because its a wide open space that they could fit a 2.5 mile run on.

Which of the Earth's layers is the thinnest (only three to thirty miles thick)?
