Identify the road that crosses the bridge immediately to the north of the Albuquerque, NM, placemark.

Interstate 40 (Coronado Freeway)

Which of the following coordinate pairs is associated with Lisbon, Portugal?

38°N, 9°W

What is the approximate elevation value of the Colorado River as displayed in the Grand Canyon placemark?

475 meters above sea level

Because Earth spins eastward, time moves westward; each time zone to the east is successively one hour later. This means that it is later in time zones to the east of you, and it is earlier in time zones to the west of you. Based on Figure A1 above, if it is 4 pm in Denver, Colorado, USA, what time is it in Santiago, Chile?

7pm

Based on your assessment of latitude and longitude in Google Earth™, which of the following statements is NOT correct?

Lines of longitude are parallel with one another, thus insuring that a degree of longitude is equidistant anywhere on the globe.

Besides creating a tidal bulge on the Moon, Earth's gravitational tidal force also affects the Moon's rotation by exerting a force that keeps one side of the Moon's tidal bulge facing Earth as it orbits. This particular phenomenon is called tidal locking, where the Moon's rotation and orbital periods are synchronized. A similar force is exerted by the Moon on Earth's rotation, but to a much smaller extent. Comparing the rotation and orbital period of the Moon with those of Earth, rank the periods from longest to shortest.

Longest Period to Shortest period: Earth's orbital period, Moon's orbital period and Moon's rotation period (place together), Earth's rotation period

On June 21st, which location will experience the least amount of sunlight?

D

If the date is December 21, at which placemark would the sun be directly overhead at noon?

E

The Moon and Earth interact through their mutual gravitational forces. The Moon's rotation rate and the ocean tides on Earth are consequences of the gravitational tidal forces exerted by each body on the other. Considering the Moon, rank the gravitational tidal force exerted on it by Earth for three different lunar locations.

Greatest to least: near side (a), midway (b), far side (c)

What sphere is indicated by curvilinear feature at the Albuquerque, NM, placemark?

Hydrosphere

The ideas of space, location, and place are slightly different concepts, and all three are needed to gain a full understanding of geography. With the examples below, determine whether each is describing a space, location, or place.

Place: Montague Island is one of the last natural homes of the Colorado Delta clam. San Ignacio Lagoon draws whale-watchers from around the world because gray whales migrate to the waters every winter. Location: La Paz, Mexico is located at 24.1422° N, 110.3108° W. Tijuana is located south of San Diego, but north of Ensenada. Space: The boundaries of Isla Cerralvo. The beaches of Cabo San Lucas.

Utilizing the street view imagery from the two greater Albuquerque area placemarks (Southern Boulevard and Sandia Crest Road), which of the following statements is most strongly supported?

There is significant variation in the vegetation of the greater Albuquerque area.

Excluding political adjustments to time (such as Daylight Savings Time), which of the following cities would be +8:00 Greenwich Mean Time?

Urumqi, China

Which of the following is NOT a capability of Google Earth™?

You can view live imagery.

On what part of the Google Earth™ window are the on-screen navigation controls located?

top right

As previously discussed, the eastward spin of Earth means that both time and new days move westward across the globe. This eastward spin also has implications for sunrise and sunset: as the globe turns, the sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west. This means that time zones in the east experience sunrise before those in the west. Because the sun rises in the east, sunrise occurs on the eastern edge of a time zone before it occurs on the western edge. Despite this difference in time of sunrise, the local time is the same throughout the time zone. Based on what you learned about time calculations across the globe, including information on time zones and the International Date Line, which of the following statements are correct? Refer to the map below.

A graduate student is flying from Detroit International Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport for a fieldwork trip. The flight leaves at 12pm on a Thursday and it is 13 hours long. The graduate student arrives in Tokyo on Friday afternoon at 3pm. A woman flies from Oslo, Norway to Lagos, Nigeria—a distance of nearly 5000 miles, but does not change time zones. Yet if she flies from Oslo, Norway to London, England—approximately 700 miles away—she does change time zones. A man traveling to Argentina can go to any place in the country and the time will not change; yet if he travels just north to Bolivia or Paraguay, it becomes an hour earlier.

What is the name of the building in downtown Albuquerque that would cast the longest shadow?

Albuquerque Plaza/Hyatt Regency

Where would you find the information regarding a view's coordinates, elevation, and imagery date?

At the bottom of the 3D Viewer.

Location is a general term to describe a particular position in geographic space. Determine whether each of the following examples describes a relative location or an absolute location.

Relative location: Key West can be found to the south and west of Everglades National Park. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are located in eastern California. The United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. is located 1.2 miles from the Washington Monument. Absolute location: The geographic center of the contiguous United States is located at 39°50′′N 98°35′′W. The Empire State Building is located at 350 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10118.

If you needed to find a specific place on Earth, you would use the

Search panel.

So far, you have investigated space and location in detail. Often, people are interested in more than just a location, and would also like to understand the physical, natural and biological characteristics of a specific point or an area within space. Place describes the attributes of an area, which neither space nor location does. All three concepts are needed to gain an understanding of a particular position on Earth. Figure C1 depicts the Indonesian archipelago (a cluster of many islands). The islands vary in size, and include Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumba, Flores, Timor, and over forty smaller unlabeled islands. Based on the information above, which of the following is an example of place?

The Indonesian Islands surround the Java Sea and are tropical islands with a wide variety of plants and animals.

Based on your assessment of latitude and longitude in Google Earth™, which of the following statements is NOT correct?

The maximum value of longitude is 90°.

When people think of space they often picture the void between planets, stars, and other celestial bodies—outer space. However, in this exercise, you will explore the concept of geographic space. When geographers conduct research, they focus on a particular area of the Earth that can include land, water, and/or air. This area is referred to as space and describes the region in general. Within this space, there can be any number of locations and places, which provide more information about the space. Of the following choices, choose the statements that describe a geographic space.

The ocean floor at the intersection of the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates The mountains of North America The Amazon rainforest

The revolution of Earth on its orbit around the Sun, shown in Figure 1, takes about 365.25 days, measured as the time taken by the Sun to complete two crossings of the equator. This is known as the tropical, or solar, year—the length of year that remains relatively fixed. Earth's revolution determines the length of the tropical year and, therefore, of the seasons making up that year. Rotation, also shown in Figure 1, takes 24 hours to complete. Since only half of Earth faces the Sun at any given time, the other half is in shadow. As a result, Earth's rotation ensures that all parts of its surface undergo alternating periods of light and darkness during this 24-hour timespan. The circle of illumination demarcates the lighted and dark halves of Earth. It bisects the equator, resulting in equal days and nights of 12 hours each at that latitude (equator) throughout the year. The length of days at all other latitudes change throughout the year. Which aspects of seasonality are caused by either revolution or rotation?

duration of the seasons daily pattern of days and nights length of a tropical year
