How do you think deserts and rainforests impacted settlement?
Rainforests contain many species and types of vegetation, they also cover up most of South America, living in the rainforests are dangerous so these places could not be safely settled. Deserts also keep people from being able to settle down in a place, and there was no natural resources that were useful to people at the time, but abundant deposits of oil can be found, and many cities will base their exports off of those.
What vegetation characterizes the Amazon River basin?
Rainforests, grasslands, desert bushes, thick trees and moss in the tundra.
How did the Andes Mountains affect settlement along the western coast of South America?
The Andes Mountains are a barrier to people looking to move into the interior. As a result of this, more settlement in South America has happened along the eastern and the western coasts.
How are the landforms of the region both an advantage and disadvantage?
The Mountains are a barrier to people looking to move into the interior, but they were home to some of the most important civilizations in the hemisphere.
What are 2 reasons for the variety of climate and vegetation found in Latin America?
There is a lot of different levels of elevation, which contributes to the change in climate and vegetation. Also the closer it vegetation is to water sources the more it grows, also towards the coast it would be more humid and warm.
What types of vertical climate zones are found in Latin America?
Tierra Helda , Tierra Frida , Tierra Templada , Tierra Caliente
Describe some of the issues happening in cities throughout Latin America due to increasing populations and tourism in the following categories.
Water:Cities have exhausted their water resources and have used up all of the underground water. This leads to a shortage of water. Sewage:With rising populations the cities dont have enough money to build new faculties for sewage. Electricity:_Unenployment and rising crime rates lead to people not having enough to pay their taxes, and not having enough to make a living. Transportation:With overpopulation transportation forms are now more crowded than ever, and many have been shut down due to insufficient funding from the government. Housing:People are becoming unemployed which means they dont have enough to pay for houses in the city, therefore they have to stay in the slums, which have high crime rates, and are really sketchy.
Infrastructure
"The basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise."
Slash-and-burn
"They cut trees, brush, and grasses and burned the debris to clear the field. This method was particularly effective in humid and tropical areas."
What types of climate zones are found in Latin America?
Tropical Climate Zones , Dry Climate Zones , Mid-Climate Zones
Orinico River
"The Orinoco River winds through the northern part of the continent, mainly in Venezuela. It flows more than 1,500 miles, partly along the Colombia Venezuela border, to the Atlantic."
Parana River
"The Paraná River has its origins in the highlands of southern Brazil. It travels about 3,000 miles south and west through Paraguay and Argentina,"
What factors have drawn people from the countryside to the cities of the region?
Higher paying jobs, better healthcare, and better education. Out in the countryside there are not many schools, also the crime rate is high, and all of the pollution(smoke) from the city distills into the countryside. I suppose its better to be at the source then where its worse.
What effect did natural resources have on the development of the region?
In the Amazon, people looking for short time profit gain and more farmland have deforested a lot of the Amazon, but due to this the economy is booming. Considering that most of the natural gas and oil is found in the southern tip of South America, it was a bee hive for settlers looking for a job.
How might the climate and vegetation of Latin America have affected:
Migration: People chose to settle near water sources and places with abundant natural resources. This is why a lot of the population in South America is on the east and west coasts, because of the trade, the seafood, etc. Settlement: People cannot settle in the rainforests and the deserts in overly large amounts, so most of the settlements are close to the coast. Lifestyles: _People at higher elevations have to eat more oxygen rich foods? and have too adapt to the low oxygen levels, and the probable cold. While people at lower altitudes with a hotter climate must convert their homes to keep them cool, and must sell fruits and vegetables to people who live on high, *like selling food for animals to people on high mountains*
