What were the amelioration proposals?
- Female slaves should not be whipped. - Religious instruction and marriage should be encouraged. - Slave families should not be separated. - Slaves should have time off on Saturday to go to the market so they can be free to go to church on Sunday. - Slaves should not be sold as payment for debts. - Overseers/drivers should not carry whips on the field. - A record of lashes given to male slaves should be kept. All punishment must occur 24 hrs after the offence. - There should be the establishment of banks which would encourage the slaves to save money. - Taxes on manumission

An Act that allowed slaves the right to trial by a jury in serious cases.

Cause ain't nobody got time for that :/ Also cause of the division of plantations, the movement of slaves and mere inefficiency

When were the amelioration acts passed ?
Near the end of the 1700's. From the 1780's and after that, individual colonies amended their law to improve the material existence of slaves, to reduce mortality, and to promote a healthy natural increase among them.

The Consolidated Slave Act of Jamaica This imposed a fine of €100 for anyone found guilty of mutilating or dismembering a slave.

To delay the abolition of slavery. Most of these proposals supported the interest and preservation of slavery. It was thought that if the living conditions of the slaves were improved, then the abolitionists would no longer push for the abolition of slavery.
