How did English colonists differ from Spanish or French colonists?
The Spanish and French restricted those who could go to their New World colonies. The Spanish sent mainly noblemen, soldiers, slaves, and priests to their colonies, while the French permitted only Catholics to go to New France. In contrast, England allowed almost anyone who wanted to leave to go to its North American colonies. This opened up the New World to Englishmen who had varied rea- sons for starting a life in that new land.
