affiliation group

limited-service property

A lodging business that is smaller, provides fewer services, and is less expensive than a full-service hotel.

full-service hotel

A lodging property that offers a full range of services and amenities including recreational services, food and beverage services, a room service staff, a concierge staff, a housekeeping staff, a front desk, and maintenance.

resort

A place that provides entertainment, recreation, leisure activities, accommodations, and food for guests

meal plan

A room rate that includes meals; some choices of meal plans: are European Plan, Continental plan, Modified American Plan, and Full American Plan.

trade show

An exhibit during which people show and sell their goods and services.

hostel

An inexpensive place to stay where sleeping rooms, bathrooms, and kitchen facilities are shared.

referral system

limited-service hotels

Hotels that offer a medium level of service and a midrange price.

institutional housing

Housing that is provided for people who live in institutions.

convention center

Large building designed specifically to hold large meetings, conventions, and trade shows.

conference center

Lodging facility where 60% of the occupancy is generated by conference.

budget hotels

Lodging properties that have the lowest rates and the least service.

senior housing

Places to live for people over 55. Range from hospital-like to resort-like.

bed-and-breakfast

Privately owned home offering one to five guest rooms.

exhibit hall

Space where trade show is held.

hotel management

The day-to-day running of the hotel.

rack rate

The official rate for one night's lodging at a lodging property.

guest mix

The percentage of each market segment that is staying at a lodging property.

room rate

The price actually charged to a guest for one night's lodging.

lodging concept

The whole idea of the lodging property or chain; includes the theme, target market, décor, ambiance, and level of service.

specialty accommodations

Variety of accommodations that aren't motels, or hotels, such as lodges.
