Calcium chloride test Hygrometer test Polyethylene sheet test Electrical impedance test

The traditional method of making carpet by interlacing warp and weft yarns; it is a method that produces a very attractive, durable carpet, but it is the most expensive method of manufacturing carpet by machine

Carpet weaving

embeds the pile yarn in a backing of liquid vinyl; when the vinyl hardens, the tufts are permanently locked in the vinyl

Fusion bonding

Titration test

Used to determine level of alkalinity in concrete. Involves grinding portions of the concrete, mixing portions with demineralized water, and performing laboratory chemical analysis. Testing lab must perform this test.

Louvered shutters

Rigid panels, usually of wood, that are hinged so they can be opened or closed

A sedimentary rock made of sand and other substances; called flagstone when cleaved from the original rock

Some guidelines for locating carpet seams

-minimize the number of seams when possible -avoid placing seams across the main path of traffic -avoid running seams perpendicularly into doorways -avoid placing seams where light will make them more apparent -place seams away from major architectural or interior design features -avoid placing seams where traffic is heavy or where the flow of traffic changes direction

Carpet calculations on stairs

1) multiply the number of risers by the height of the riser in inches 2) multiply the number of treads plus one by the depth of each tread in inches (# of treads +1 = # of risers) 3) add the results from steps 1 and 2 4) allow 1" extra for each pair of treads and risers (same as the # of risers) to account for wrapping the nosing 5) add results from steps 3 and 4 6) divide total by 12 to convert from inches to feet 7) multiply by the width of the stairs in feet; divide the number of square feet by 9 to get the total number in square yards and round up to the nearest whole number 8) if any landings are included, add the area of the landing to the total from step 7

Concrete should be tested continuously tested for moisture level prior to applying any critical finishes, such as vinyl, rubber, linoleum, urethane, and wood. The flooring industry generally recommends that these types of flooring not be installed until the moisture emission from the concrete has reached a certain level. alkali-silica reaction (ASR)

In this process, strongly alkaline cement begins to dissolve sand and rock within the concrete. The chemical reaction creates a gel-like material that causes tremendous pressure in the pores of the concrete surface. This pressure, in turn, can buckle or blister floor finishes. The risk for ASR can be reduced by specifying aggregates that are not susceptible to ASR, using low lime cement, proper curing, and not finishing the concrete with a hard trowel surface.

Pattern repeat in wallpaper

The distance from one point to the next instance of the same point in the pattern

Paint pigments

The finely ground natural or synthetic insoluble materials that give paint its color and concealing abilities

The square footage method of wallpaper calculations

The total area to be covered is calculated, modified by an allowance for waste and deductions for doors, windows, and other areas not to be covered. Then, the area covered by one roll or bolt of wallcovering is divided into the total area to determine the number of rolls or bolts needed 1) Calculate the perimeter of the room in feet 2) Multiply the perimeter by the height of the walls to be covered to get the total amount of area required in square feet 3) To the area found in step 2, add an extra 20% for waste 4) Calculate the area of doors, windows, and other features that will not be covered. 15'^2 for one door opening or two windows is a common rule of thumb 5) Subtract the area in step 4 from the area in step 3. This is the total amount of wallpaper needed 6) Divide the area per roll of wallpaper into the area found in step 5 to determine the number of rolls needed. A roll of 27" wide wallpaper contains 36'^2. The more commonly used double roll contains 72'^2. Round fractions up to the nearest whole

The strip method of wallpaper calculations

The total perimeter of the room is calculated in inches and then divided by the width of the roll of wallcovering material. This gives the number of strips needed. This number is multiplied by the height of the ceiling to get the number of linear feet. The linear footage can be converted to linear yards or to the number of rolls, if necessary. Add an extra 20% for waste

pH test

Used to test the surface of concrete that will come in contact with flooring adhesives or other critical floor coatings Simple test using coated paper strip or small pH meter. Once pH is known, it can be compared with the maximum pH recommended by the flooring manufacturer pH of 8.5 is considered ideal and about the minimum that concrete can have, with values up to 9.0 being acceptable

Electrical impedance test

Uses proprietary meters to determine the moisture content of the concrete by measuring conductance and capacitance. Probes of the meter are placed on the concrete, and the percentage of moisture content in the slab is read out directly.

Stretched in carpet Installation

Uses tackless strips attached around the perimeter of the room; these strips have embedded, sharp points that face toward the walls; the carpet is stretched against these strips, which hold the carpet in place; a carpet cushion is either stapled to wood floors or glued to concrete floors after the tackless strips are in place
