5. What is generator excitation voltage?

An excitation voltage is the amount of direct voltage required to excite a certain field coil. Excitation is required to create magnetic field around the coils.

Why is CSD / IDG servicing so critical?

Because it provides electrical power for the aircraft system.

What two faults can occur from improper servicing?

What is the purpose of a CSD?

It's a type of transmission that takes an input shaft rotating at a wide range of speeds, delivering this power to an output shaft that rotates at a constant speed, despite the varying input. They are used to drive mechanisms, typically electrical generators that require a constant input speed.

4. When servicing an IDG and there is no sight glass how do you know when the component is properly serviced?

Read caution notes and follow Aircraft Maintenance Manual Step by Step. Ensure that the entire IDG oil System is properly Filled with oil and all air pockets are expelled.

10. Before the removal of an IDG state one safety precaution that you must do to ensure the safety of you and your coworkers.

The center panel in the cockpit and the engine engage lever should have a warning label to not turn on the engine and the IDG switch should have another warning label on it.

7. When you disconnect an IDG or CSD explain what happens during the actual disconnect process?

The panels in the cockpit must have a sign that warns people not to turn on the engine. The IDG button must be clicked for 3 seconds for the solenoid to disconnect the IDG but this must be given a 60 second cool down before disconnecting the other IDGs. A light should come on that says DISC. Slowly pull the disconnect reset ring which will let the part move freely.

The reconnect procedure is accomplished with the engine off.

6. What is a "Shear Shaft"?

To disengage the IDG from the gearbox when the IDG is seized.

8. How do you reconnect an IDG or CSD? Explain the process.

To reconnect the IDG the disconnect reset ring should be pulled to the limit and released slowly and this should be done after the amber disconnect lights is turned off. Once this is done close the engine cowling and this should be ok to separate.
