Social Darwinism is a theory of the time that reflected racism through the belief about survival of the fittest as applied to human society. This upset most Africans because they felt that just because they were not as progressive in the fields of science and technology that didn't mean that they were a lower scale of humans as far as cultural and physical development. They also disliked this because they felt it was a justification that the Europeans gave for why they were superior.

The European countries that experienced the Industrial Revolution needed to add land to their control that would provide new markets and new materials that would help their economies. Because there was a race to obtain more land, which was fueled by the Industrial Revolution, a great sense of national pride made the people want more and more.
