Codominance

A condition in which neither of two alleles of a gene is dominant or recessive.

dihybrid cross

A cross between individuals that have different alleles for the same gene

monohybrid cross

A cross between individuals that involves one pair of contrasting traits

Allele

An alternative form of a gene.

Heterozygous

An organism that has two different alleles for a trait

Homozygous

An organism that has two identical alleles for a trait

Genotype

An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations.

Phenotype

An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits.

Non-Mendelian Genetics

Inheritance patterns that express incomplete dominance

Non-Mendelian Traits

Traits that do not follow Mendel's patterns of heredity.

polygenic traits

characteristics that are influenced by more than one pair of genes (ie height)

testcross

cross between an organism with an unknown genotype and an organism with a recessive phenotype

dominant gene

member of a gene pair that controls the appearance of a certain trait

incomplete dominance

one allele is not completely dominant over the other allele

locus

position of a gene on a chromosome

Recessive gene

trait of an organism that can be masked by the dominant form of a trait
