Mohenjo-Daro

"The mound of the dead," was the largest city of the Indus civilization. It was located on the right bank of the Indus River in southern Pakistan.

Agra

A city in northern India that was the sometime capital of the Mughal Empire. Best known for the Taj Mahal.

A large landmass that is smaller than a continent.

Harappa

A village located on the banks of a now-dry section of the Ravi River. A large city from the Indus civilization. The city also included a granary of about 9,000 square feet.

Monsoon

A weather pattern in which major wind systems reverse direction depending on the season. In summer, the winds usually travel from the ocean to land. They bring drenching rains that may harm agriculture. In winter, the winds blow from land to the ocean and may cause drought.

The capital city of the Maurya and Gupta dynasty. Became the intellectual and cultural center of the empire

Ganges River

The sacred river of Hinduism and perhaps the most revered river in the world. Rising in the Himalayas, the river flows southeast before it empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Mount Everest

The tallest landform on Earth, with an elevation of 29,035 feet. It is located in the Himalayan Mountains on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Indian Subcontinent

a geographic region that makes up most of South Asia. It includes the countries of Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Kolkata

a large city in India, also known as Calcutta

one of Earth's longest rivers. It flows for about 1,800 miles from the Himalayas in Tibet to the Arabian Sea. The great city of Mojenjo-Daro, grew along its banks.

the holiest city of Hinduism that is found on the Ganges River
