Obtaining a license
The superintendent of insurance shall issue a resident insurance agent license to an individual applicant whose home state is Ohio if all the following apply
those not required to have a license include:
*any officer, director, or employee of an insurer or insurance agent, provided that they do not receive any commission of policies written or sold in this state *any officer, director etc of an insurer as it relates to underwriting, loss of control, inspection or the processing, adjusting, investigating or settling of claims *any employee of an insurer of or an insurance agent who performs administration and/or enrollment duties for group life, health, or employee benefit plans

*the applicant is currently licensed and in good standing in their home state *the applicant has submitted the proper application to the state to be a nonresident agent *applicant has not committed any act that is grounds for denial, suspension, revocation of a license *applicant is of good character and reputation, honest, trustworthy and suitable *applicants home state will issue a nonresident agent license to agents from ohio on the same basis *a non resident agent moving to ohio may change to resident agent status w/o testing if an application is made within 90 days of moving to ohio and the agent is in good standing in their home state
-a member or employee of a business entity licensed as an insurance agent, upon the death if disability of the sole or remaining licensed insurance agent -entering active service -any other persons the super determine that the public interest will be best served by the issuance of the license
- the surviving spouse or court appointed rep of a licensed agent who dies to allow time fir the sale of the insurance business owned by the agent or for the recovery or return if the agent to the business or to provide for the training and licensing of new personnel to operate the agents business. -a temp license issued under the guidelines of this section shall remain in force for a period not to exceed 180 days. -the super may limit the authority of any temp license to protect insured and the public.
renewal of license
-an individual seeking to renew a resident insurance agent license shall apply BIENNIALLY for a renewal of the license ON OR BEFORE THE LAST DAY OF THE LICENSEE'S BIRTH MONTH -the super shall send a renewal notice to all licensee at least one month prior to the renewal date -renewal applications shall be submitted on forms approved by the super and accompanied by a BIENNIAL RENEWAL FEE OF $25 -IF THE CONTINUING EDUCATION requirements have been met, the renewal fee will be waived
Change in address
-each licensed agent must notify the superintendent of any change in the agents name, address, email, phone number with in 30 DAYS of the change - if moving, must notify super within 30 days. if in good standing in ohio, the license will be changed to a nonresident license and no fee of application is required.
-minimum attained age is 18 -applicant is a US citizen -the applicant has not committed any act that us grounds for denial, suspension or revocation of a license -the applicant has completed any required insurance education program and passed exams
-is of good character and reputation, is honest and trustworthy, and is suitable to be licensed -has consented to a criminal background check and results are satisfactory to the superintendent -has submitted the required application and paid required fee -must apply for the license within 180 days of passing the exam
-if the renewal app and fee is not submitted by the required date, the individual may submit a late renewal app, fee of $50 prior to the first dare of the second month following the license renal date - if requirements aren't met, it will be suspended for non renewal.
-may request an extension, along with supporting documents to the super. the request must be made prior to the renewal date of the license -eligiable for reinstatement within 12 months of the date the license should have been renewed ($100)
Notice of Administrative Action or Criminal Prosecution
-the agent must notify the super of any admin actions taken against the agent in another jurisdiction or gov agency within 30 DAYS AFTER THE FINAL DISPOSITION OF THE MATTER -must notify any criminal prosecution other than misdemeanor traffic within 30 DAYS AFTER THE AGENTS INITAL APPEARANE BEFORE A JUDGE -agent shall provide a certified copy of the entry or order that reflects the final disposition of the prosection
the superintendent of insurance shall issue a resident agent licensed to a BUSINESS ENTITIY if all of the following apply:
-the business entity is domiciled in ohio and maintains its principle place of business in ohio -has designated a licensed insurance agent who will be responsible for the businesses entity's compliance with insurance laws of this state -the business has not committed any acts which are grounds for denial or suspension -business has submitted any required application and paid fees -has submitted any other documents required by the superintendent.
Temporary License
-the super of insurance may issue a temp insurance agent license to any of the following persons if the super determines that the license is necessary for the servicing of insurance business.
Persons required to be licensed
AGENTS: any person, in order to sell, solicit or negotiate insurance must be licensed. Including limited lines agents, variable life insurance agents & surplus line brokers.

NON-RESIDENT AGENTS- the superintendent of insurance may issue a nonresident insurance agent license to an applicant who does not reside in ohio, if all the following exists:
pre licensing
required pre licensing courses: life, variable life, annuities 20 hrs accident and health 20 hrs property and causality 20 hrs personal lines 20 hrs surety bail bonds 20 hrs *upon completion of the courses, the applicant will be given a course completion certificate form prescribed by the superintendent. you will have UNLIMITED attempts at passing the state exam within 180 days of receiving the certificate
