6 months. Issued to a new ship. When company takes on a new ship which is new to the company. When ship changes Flag/.

What is a SMC?

A safety management certificate. Original kept on-board. Valid for 5 years. Verifies ship is in compliance with the ISM Code.

What is a 'Live Ship?'

A ship which can come back into service within 24hrs. SMC Valid, audits remain carried out as req'd. - Longer than3 months laid up- Additional ISM Audit req'd.

What Ships Comply with the ISM Code?

All passenger ships on domestic/ International Voyages Cargo Ships> 500grt on international voyages

What Certification is required- DOC?

Document of Compliance. Original in office, copy on-board every vessel. Valid for 5 years subject to annual external verification. Verifies company is in compliance with theISM Code ISM SMC- Subject to intermediate verification between 2-3 year.

What is an, Observation, Non Conformity, and Major Non Conformity?

Observation- Statement of Fact backed up with evidence. Non-Conformity- Objective evidence indicates Non Fulfilment of a specific requirement. Major Non-Conformity- A deviation that possess a serious threat to the safety of personnel or ship, or marine environment that requires immediate corrective action.

What are the Masters responsibilities under ISM?

Can a company lose their DOC?

Yes. MCA can withdraw the DOC. When a major Non-Conformity os identified the MCA can withdraw or suspend the DOC. If the MCA consider the company unable to operate ships without a risk of; Serious danger to safety of life Serious danger to property Serious harm to the environment
