describe Miles davis on hard bop
it was a reaction to the anemic, cool jazz records that exploited the superficial elements of west coast. Also a reaction to bebop & west coast. It returned to the roots, meaning, gospel and blues influence. Hard bop was mostly played by African American jazz musicians * Gill Evans & David Brubeck*. Most hard bop musicians wanted to get away from bebop bc it had turned self indulgent. It uses bop, bebop techniques but goes back to the roots and has a similar harmony, rhythm and melody than bebop. It had attitude, sassy, cocky and "Funk" became an important concept. It was bop with a harder edge (but not more difficult) and is also known as soul jazz
