SUMMARY

"Continental - Continental" -Folded Mountains +Himalayas "Oceanic - Oceanic" -Subduction Zone -Forms oceanic trench -Forms arc of the volcanic island +Aleutian Trench +Marianas Trench +Marinas Island "Oceanic - Continental" -Subduction Zone -Forms oceanic trench -Forms arc volcanic mountains on the continent +Peri - Chile Trench +Andes Mountain

Oceanic - Oceanic Convergent Boundaries

-One oceanic plate subducts another oceanic plate. -Forms volcanic islands and trenches. -Effects are: ○ Deep earthquakes ○ An oceanic trench ○ A chain of volcanic islands ○ The annihilation of the oceanic lithosphere -Example: ○ The Pacific and Mariana plates *ocean plate colliding with another ocean plate. *the less dense plate slides under the more dense plate creating a subduction zone called TRENCH.

Subduction

-The process of the sinking of plates beneath another plate. -A process of pulling something down. *One plate going under another plate.

Continental - Continental Convergent Boundaries

-Two plates carrying continental crust push together -The subduction zone is destroyed, folded mountains are produced, and two continents sutured together -Example: ○ Collision of the Indian Plate with a Eurasian plate that formed the Himalayan Mountains *Form mountain ranges due to the plates crashing into each other and buckling upward

Oceanic - Continental Convergent Boundaries

-When one plate is composed of oceanic lithosphere and the other is composed of continental lithosphere, the denser oceanic plate is subducted. -Forms an orogenic belt and associated mountain belt (volcanic arc). -Examples: ○ The Subduction of the Pacific Plate below the Nazca Plates which formed the Andes Mountains ○ The West coast of Southern Mexico, Central America, and South America formed an oceanic trench and a chain of volcanic mountains *The ocean plate subducts under a continental plate. These form shoreline trenches and volcanic arcs or mountain ranges on land.

Convergent Plate Boundaries

-When the crust is destroyed, one plate dives under another. -They cause extensive deformation in the earth's surface. -They are characterized by extensive earthquakes. *Areas where plates move toward each other and collide, causing UPLIFT---The process that moves large bodies of Earth materials to higher elevations. *A tectonic plate boundary is where two plates collide, come together or crash into each other.

divergent boundary

A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other.

convergent boundary

A tectonic plate boundary is where two plates collide, come together or crash into each other.

transform boundary

plates slide past each other
