Wernicke's area

A brain area involved in language comprehension and expression; usually in the left temporal lobe

Occipital lobe

A region of the cerebral cortex that processes visual information, and is home to the visual cortex

Auditory cortex

An area in the temporal lobe of the brain that is responsible for hearing

Temporal lobe

An area on each hemisphere of the cerebral cortex near the temples that is the primary receiving area for auditory information and houses the auditory cortex

Association cortex

Ares of the brain that receive more than one type of sensory datum or combine sensory and motor information to perform complex cognitive tasks

Somato-sensory cortex

Deals with perception of touch, pressure, temperature, pain, movement

Visual cortex

Located in the back of the brain, it is the main information-processing centre for visual information and is located in the occipital lobe

Motor cortex

Part of the cerebral cortex. Its neurons control voluntary movements in specific parts of the body.

Broca's area

Part of the frontal lobe. It directs the muscles that lead to speech

Parietal lobe

Portion of the cerebral cortex lying at the top of the head and toward the rear; receives sensory input for touch and body position. Effectively the somato-sensory cortex

Frontal lobes

Portion of the cerebral cortex lying just behind the forehead; involved in speaking and muscle movements and in making plans and judgements

Cerebral cortex

The outer surface of the brain. It is responsible for sensory analysis, voluntary movement, higher order thought and other complex aspects of human behaviour

Sensory cortex

The parts of the cerebral cortex that receive stimulus information from the senses
