Praying Hands
Hands clasped, lifting with the pressure of heels of both hands.
Benefits of Petrissage
Increases blood flow Removes metabolic wastes Reduces local swelling Relieves fatigue Improves cellular nutrition Relaxes and lengthens muscle Relieves tension under the surface Reduces muscle soreness & stiffness Stimulates the nervous system Softens superficial fascia Produces analgesia (the inability to feel pain)-skin rolling
Sub-Acute
Is in between but more acute.
Emotional Release
Letting go or releasing suppressed emotions, the client feels relaxed and safe. Ex. Crying is the most common.
Reflex Response
Nerves are stimulated, which in turn activate a reflex arc Ex. Decreased arousal of the sympathetic nervous system A trigger of stretch receptors (muscle spindles)
Absolute
No massage will be given
Mechanical Response
Occurs as a result of pressure or range of motion: Ex. Increased blood pressure Reduces swelling Reduced scar tissue formation
Acute
Sudden/no warning - it happens right now-severe
Two types of pressure
Superficial Deep
Deep Pressure
Targets muscle
Superficial Pressure
Targets skin and underlying tissue
Ocean Waves (Thigh)
Two hands move in opposite directions while compressing and lifting tissue
Fulling (broadening)
Two hands to grasp, lift and compress tissue while moving it laterally.
Characteristics of Petrissage
Uses either the entire palmer surface of hands or fingertips Palms and fingers needed for larger areas Fingers and thumb needed for skin-rolling Fingertips for the jawline Milks tissue of metabolic wastes Draws new blood and oxygen to the tissue
Connective Tissue massage
a.k.a. Skin rolling & Bindegewebmassage Lifting the skin in any direction except downward with little or no lubricant, rolling between fingertips.
Petrissage
a.k.a. kneading Rhythmic compression, lifting away from the bone, squeezing, and releasing soft tissue.
