Matter
Melt
-One of the four ways matter can change -From a solid to a liquid -Requires heat energy
Condensation (draw a picture)
Gas--->Liquid
Sinking
Going to the bottom of a liquid
Dissolve (draw a picture)
To seem to disappear when misc with a liquid Ex. Chocolate milk, lemonade Solvent: liquid Solute: powder (substance that dissolves)
Water can change from one state to another
*Ice (solid) can change to a liquid if you add heat *Liquid can change to steam or vapor (gas) if you add heat *Liquid can change to a solid (ice) if you make it very cold
3 States of Matter
-Solid -Liquid -Gas
Solids
-Solids have a definite shape -Liquids take on the shape of the container they are poured into -Gases have no shape
What DISSOLVES in water?
-Sugar -Salt -Powdered drinks
Properties of Water
-flows downhill -colorless -odoress -75% of the earth
What does NOT dissolve in water?
-oil -sand -rocks
What FLOATS in water?
-soccer bals -boats -ships
Physical Change
A change in matter that occurs when it changes size, shape, or form
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter (similar to weight)
Volume
A measure of the amount of space occupied by matter
Property
A special quality or characteristic of something Properties must be observed. Color, size, texture, shape and weight can all be observed Properties can not be opinions, inferences or guesses Ex. a black, round shiny all
Atoms (draw a picture)
All matter is made up tiny particles. Atoms are too small tobe seen without a special microscope
Matter (draw a picture)
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
Condense
Change from a gas to a liquid (cold glass, rain)
Freeze
Change from liquid to a solid
Condensation
Formation of liquid drops of water from water vapor.
Draw a picture... What happens when matter is cooled? What happens when matter is heated?
If matter is cooled, it will contract. Molecules get closer together. If matter is heated, it will expand. Molecules spread out.
Measuring matter (draw a picture)
Mass: The amount of matter an object as in it (sort of like weight) Volume: amount of space a liquid or solid or gas takes up Length: Distance between two points
Observing
Means to examine something with your five senses
Properties
Observable characteristics that make objects different form each other Ex. Pencil is wooden Ex. Cotton Ball is soft
Floating
Resting on the surface of a liquid
Changes in Matter
SOLID >melting (+heat)> LIQUID >boiling (+heat)> GAS SOLID >freezing (-heat)> LIQUID > condensation (-heat)> GAS
What are three properties of a paper clip?
Silver Curved Shiny
Three States of Matter (draw a picture)
Solid ex. Ice Liquid ex. Water Gas ex. Steam
Evaporation (draw a picture)
Solid---> Liquid ---> Gas --->
Draw a picture of how Molecules move in a SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS
Solid: Molecules move SLOWLY, close together Liquid: Molecules move freely Gas: Molecules move fast and spread out
Freezing (draw a picture)
Water---> Liquid ---> Solid When water freezes it expands (it's the only time cold expands)
Evaporation
When a liquid changes to a gas it is called evaporation
Melting (draw a picture)
When you add enough heat to a solid
Physical change
any change in shape or size
Particles
tiny pieces that make up the materials in matter. They are too small to be seen without a microscope
