density

a measurement of how tightly packed particles are. you measure density by finding an objects mass and volume, then dividing the two.

the formula for volume

length times width times height

formula for density

mass divided by volume

characteristics of liquid

particles less tightly packed, no definite shape but definite volume, particles have medium energy, move past each other

characteristics of gas

particles move freely and widely, they have no definite shape and no definite volume, they move very quickly, have a large amount of energy

characteristics of solid

particles tightly packed together, definite shape and volume, particles vibrate and have small amount of energy

mass

the amount of matter or "stuff" an object is made out of. you use a triple beam balance to measure mass.

volume

the amount of space matter takes up. you use a graduated cylinder to measure volume.

weight

the measure of the pull of gravity on an object. you can use a scale to measure weight.

three major states of matter

the three major states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas
