Explain the argument against imperialism presented in the excerpt. What events during this period might be used to support this argument?

In the excerpt, the American Anti-Imperialist League explains how imperialism is against the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that America's government was built around. They say that it is every man's right, regardless of their race or color, to choose who governs them. During this time period, Spain had imperialised Cuba and treated them very poorly. The argument that imperialism does not follow the American belief system is supported by the fact that Spain's imperialism of Cuba against there will violated the fundamental rights of Cubans, and America itself would violate our own beliefs by becoming an imperialist nation.

Explain Theodore Roosevelt's "big stick" policy and give an example of how it was applied.

Theodore Roosevelt's "big stick" policy supported the idea of America remaining peaceful whenever possible, but having the means to defend itself whenever doing so was necessary. During his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt boosted America's navy, an example of this being the Great White Fleet. Roosevelt's fleet sailed around the world, doing no harm in the process, but instead asserting America's ability to defend itself if need be.
