bar code
An identification code that consists of either a set of vertical lines and spaces of different widths or a two-dimensional pattern of dots, squares, and other images.
Digital Pen
An input device, slightly larger than a stylus, that captures and converts a user's handwriting or drawings into a digital format, which users can upload (transfer) to a computer or mobile device.
printer
An output device attached to your computer that produces copies on paper (hard copies).
speakers
An output device that allows you to hear voice, music, and other sounds from your computer.
impact printer
An output device that creates printed images by striking an inked ribbon against paper.
input
Any data and instructions entered into the memory of a computer or mobile device.
video call
Call in which all parties see one another as they communicate over the Internet.
Digital Video Camera
Camera that records video as digital signals, which you can transfer directly to a computer or mobile device with the appropriate connection.
output
Data that has been processed into a useful format.
OMR devices
Devices that read hand-drawn marks, such as small circles or rectangles.
ink cartridge
Holds the different colors of ink for the printer.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Legislation passed in 1990 that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. .
data projector
Output device that takes the text and images displaying on a computer screen and projects them on a larger screen.
Signature Capture Pad
Pen input device that captures handwritten signatures with a stylus that is attached to the device.
3-D Printer
Printer that uses a process called additive manufacturing to create an object by adding material to a three-dimensional object, one horizontal layer at a time.
photo printer
a color printer that produces photo-lab-quality pictures.
monitor
a display that is packaged as a separate peripheral device.
laser printer
a high-speed, high-quality nonimpact printer.
video conference
a meeting between two or more geographically separated people over a network or the Internet.
mouse
a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably.
all-in-one printer (multifunction printer)
a single device that looks like a printer or a copy machine but provides the functionality of a printer, scanner, copy machine, and perhaps a fax machine
stylus
a small metal or plastic device that looks like a tiny ink pen but uses pressure instead of ink.
label printer
a small printer that prints on an adhesive-type material that can be placed on a variety of items.
pointer
a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves a pointing device.
touchpad
a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion.
mobile printer
a small, lightweight, battery-powered printer that allows a mobile user to print from a mobile device.
trackball
a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side.
interactive whiteboard
a touch-sensitive device, resembling a dry-erase board, that displays the image on a connected computer screen.
touch Screen
a touch-sensitive display device that users interact with by touching the screen with a finger.
graphics tablet (digitizer)
an electronic plastic board that detects and converts movements of a stylus or digital pen into digital signals that are sent to the computer.
keyboard
an input device that contains keys you press to enter data and instructions into a computer or mobile device

ink-jet printer
forms characters and graphics by spraying tiny drops of liquid ink onto a piece of paper.
nonimpact printer
forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper without actually contacting the paper.
thermal printer
generates images by pushing electrically heated pins against the heat-sensitive paper.
OCR devices
include a small optical scanner for reading characters and sophisticated software to analyze what is read.
plotter
kind of printer used to produce high-quality drawings such as maps and circuit diagrams.
scanner
light-sensing input device that converts printed text and images into a form the computer can process.

the computer's capability of distinguishing spoken words.
HDTV (high-definition television)
the most advanced form of digital television, working with digital broadcast signals, transmitting digital sound, supporting wide screens, and providing high resolutions.
resolution
the number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a display. Higher the number, the sharper and clearer the image.
DV technology
this allows you to input, edit, manage, publish, and share your videos in a digital format.
RFID (radio frequency identification)
uses radio signals to communicate with a tag placed in or attached to an object.
