Dr. Ezra Dee Alexander
(1892-1971) Born in Bloomington Indiana & graduated from Bloomington High School. He graduated from Indiana University in 1917 with an AB degree. He received his MD from Indiana School of Medicine in 1919. He married Mary Hunter, a teacher in the Indianapolis public school system. Alexander served several terms as a non voting member of the Grand Board of Directors.
Elder Watson Diggs
(1883-1947) Born in Christian County, Kentucky. He was the Grand Polemarch for the first 6 consecutive years of the fraternity's existence. He received the fraternity's first Laurel Wreath, December 1924. He was an educator by profession and taught in the Indianapolis public school system where he was later elevated to principle. After his death, November 11, 1947, the school where he taught name was changed to the Elder Diggs School, in his honor. Elder Diggs was instrumental in the amendment of the Indiana Constitution to allow negro enlistment into the Indiana National Guard.
Dr. Marcus Peter Blakemore
(1889-1959) He was born in Franklin, Indiana. After leaving Indiana University he organized the Electric Engineering Company, which he operated until he enlisted in WW1. He later entered the dental school of the University of Pittsburgh from which he graduated in 1923. He sold his watch for $25 to help pay incorporation fees (known to be rugged).
Paul Waymond Caine
(1890-1931) He was born in Charleston, Indiana and because of a disastrous fire in the fraternity house, in which he was employed, he never finished his sophomore year of college. He published a book on catering, which was copyrighted by Hurst Publishing Company. He was fatally burned during an explosion of gaseous materials in his business in 1922. The highest award given to alumni chapter for exemplary service to the community is named in his honor.
John Milton Lee
(1890-1958) He was born in Danville, Indiana. He later became a student at Temple University in 1915 but was compelled to leave school because of death in the family. He enlisted into the 349th field artillery in March of 1918 and served as a Seargent and Gunner. His battery enjoys the unique distinction of having been the first battery of Negro artillery men to ever open fire on the enemy. John Milton Lee fired the first shot. He was the associate editor of Modern Artillerymen, the official record of batter F, 349 Artillery. He helped organize and for several years was the president of Fairveiw Golf Club, the first Negro golf club in Pennsylvania. In 1931 he married Mary Walker Robinson. He was also a member of the board of managers of the Columbia Community Branch of the YMCA. Early accounts listed him as the dreamer.
George Wesley Edmonds
(1890-1962) Born in Vanderburgh County, Knight Township, Indiana. After he returned home for tht summer of 1911 his father became ill and died of pneumonia. He became head of the family which prevented his return to school. George took a job with the coal mines and railroad and worked with them until he died of pneumonia on June 13, 1962. He married the forma Willa Mae Forte and settled in Stevenson, Indiana. They became the parents of one son, Noel. The fraternity lost contact with George for 67 years until founder Irvin identified a photograph of him in 1976.
Attorney Henry Turner Asher
(1890-1963) He was born in Woodburn, Kentucky. He graduated from Bloomington High School during 1910. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in 1914. He was an instructor at the Lincoln Institute, Jefferson City, Missouri. He later received his LLB from the Detroit College of Law in 1928.
Dr. Byron Kenneth Armstrong
(1890-1980) He was born in Westfield Indiana. He earned his Masters degree from Columbia University in 1913. He earned his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. During WW1 he served as an investigator for the Department of Labor. He was awarded the 6th Laurel Wreath in 1935. The highest academic achievement award exclusively to undergraduate is named in his honor. He attended Howard University with Diggs.
Dr. Guy Levis Grant
(1891-1973) He was born in New Albany, Indiana. He received his DDS degree from Indiana Dental School. He served as a member of the Grand Board of Directors and was the fraternity's Historian. He came from a large family of 13 and 5 siblings became members. The highest award given to undergraduate members for meritorious achievements is given in his honoer.
Edward Giles Irvin
(1893-1982) He was born in Spencer, Indiana and graduated from Kokomo, Indiana High School. He was a pioneer in promoting basketball and trtack athletics in the small towns of Indiana. He was a member of the masonics and the odd fellow lodges. He owned and operated the Afro American Manufacturing Co. in Chicago which produced novelties, candies, and specialties. In March 1922 he established the Shining Star, a weekly newspaper in Anderson, Indiana. The highest award given to an undergraduate chapter for exemplary service in the community is named in his honor. He received the 24th Laurel Wreath in 1976. He was known as the Journalist.
