Mortality Rates
US Mortality Statistics
-From death certificates collected from 50 states and DC -Deaths ranked by number of deaths from each cause of death -Group by age, sex, and race
Mortality Statistics come from information in death certifications
-U.S filed in a death registration area (a geographic area for which mortality data are published) -U.S-public health and the National Center for Health Statistics process these and produce statistics
Crude mortality rate equation
All deaths during a calendar year/ average total population at midyear of population at midyear x 100,000= number of deaths per 100,000 population in that year
Mortality
Death
Cause specific mortality rate equation
Deaths from the disease in a certain year/ average total population at midyear or population at midyear x 100,000
Proportionate Mortality Ratio (PMR) Equation
Deaths from the disease in a certain year/total deaths (not total population) x 100
Survival Rates Equation
Number of cases alive at end of time period/ Number of cases at beginning of time period x 100
Case Fatality Rate Equation
Number of deaths due to a disease in a specified time period/ Number of cases of the disease in the same time period x 100
Maternal Mortality equation
Number of deaths from puerperal causes in a year/Number of live births in a year x 100,000 live births
Infant Mortality equation
Number of infant deaths in a year/ Number of live births in a year x 1,000 live births
Infant Mortality
Rate at which infants die during the first year of life Important indicator of the health status of a population Reflects the health status of the mother and baby during pregnancy and birth
Crude mortality rate
The population who die every year
Case Fatality Rate
The probability of death among people diagnosed with a certain disease
Maternal Mortality
The rate at which women die in childbirth or because of pregnancy complications in a particular population
Survival Rates
To measure how many people with a certain condition are still alive after a certain time period
Specific
To measure the rate of death in a particular population subgroup or from particular disease
Crude
To measure the rate of death of the total population
Adjusted
To take account of age differences between two population
Cause specific mortality rate
Used to show the number of deaths due to a specific cause
Proportionate Mortality Ratio (PMR)
Used to show the proportion of all deaths due to a specific cause
