Discuss the ways in which the Beach Boys crafted their musical identity in the years after the Beatles arrived. Be sure to cite the ways in which their music took a different approach toward songwriting, arranging, and production by using specific examples of songs to illustrate your points.

The influence The Beatles had on the Beach Boys and back again took pop music into experimental territory. It forced all the artists involved to take huge risks to break new ground, and created a domino effect that influenced plenty of artists from the era. For Brian Wilson, the creative force behind The Beach Boys, he now had a mission: to top The Beatles' latest album. Once Wilson and his group responded with Pet Sounds, he'd succeeded. The album was so good Paul McCartney said it heavily influenced him during the making of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beach Boys song, 'God Only Knows', "It's very emotional, always a bit of a choker with me," said Paul McCartney of this Pet Sounds ballad. ... "We made it a religious ceremony," he said of recording Pet Sounds.

Discuss the primary factors that led to the demise of rock's first wave. How had rock music changed by 1960? Who were the individuals out of the music business and why? Include, in your discussion, the ways in which payola contributed to rock's downfall.

Payola Investigations refers to investigations by the House Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight into payola, the practice of record promoters paying DJs or radio programmers to play their labels' songs. A payola scandal turned the world of rock radio on its head in 1959, taking down one of the eras most beloved DJs, Alan Freed, and almost costing Dick Clark his career. In the 1960s, rock and roll in its purest form was slowly taken over by pop rock, beat, psychedelic rock, blues rock, and folk rock, which had grown in popularity

Compare and contrast the British invasion with rock's first wave from 1955 to 1960. In what ways was the music similar, and in what ways was it different? Consider musical developments, the bands, and individual musicians involved and note the ways in which audiences in both the United States and the UK reacted to each wave of rock.

The British Invasion was a cultural phenomenon of the mid-1960s, when rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom and other aspects of British culture became popular in the United States and significant to the rising "counterculture" on both sides of the Atlantic. The bands that were part of the 1960s British Invasion were The Rolling Stones, Moody Blues and the Kinks. Chicago was an American band, not British; and The Police, although British, was not from the 1960s but the 1980s.

Compare and contrast the musical output of the following musicians: Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly. How were their approaches to rock and roll similar and/or different? In your answer, consider their role in 1950s rock and roll, their musical and performance style, and their influence on later musicians.

The bigger labels were not interested in rock and roll at the time until Elvis showed up with more charisma than the other artists listed. Also the way he was marketed helped him sell more records than anyone else but in a brand new way that no one did before. Chuck Berry used to record on independent R&B labels with influences of CW as an attempt to appeal to the pop fans. By blending R&B and CW it created the "whitening" of R&B. This blend influenced artists like Buddy Holly and Bill Haley.
