In 1939 she was supposed to sing in constitution hall but wasn't allowed to because of her color. Instead Eleanor Roosevelt (at the time the First Lady) got her to sing in front of the Lincoln memorial and over 75,000 people showed up to hear her sing "My Country 'Tis Of Thee, Sweet Land Of Liberty, Of Thee I Sing". In this time she was choked with emotion. She later said "I had no bitterness them. I have no bitterness now."

(The videos we watched in class about this guy was him performing the Lord's Prayer with a full choir & the prayer which was performed with Celine deon)
