Differentiate isotonic, isometric, and isokinetic exercises.

o Isotonic exercise: involves muscle shortening & active movement (carrying out ADLs, independently performing range-of-motion exercises, and swimming, walking, jogging, and bicycling.) o Isometric exercise: involves muscle contraction w/o shortening (contractions of the quadriceps and gluteal muscles, such as what occurs when holding a yoga pose, plank.) o Isokinetic exercise: involves muscle contraction w/ resistance (rehabilitative exercises for knee and elbow injuries and lifting weights)

Lateral Assist Device

reduce pt - surface friction during side-to-side transfers. (i.e., roller boards, slide boards, transfer boards, inflatable mattress, & friction-reducing lateral-assist devices)

What are the physical assessment of mobility?

• General ease of movement and gait • Alignment • Joint structure and function • Muscle mass, tone, and strength • Endurance

Benefits of Exercise to Cardiovascular System

• Increased efficiency of the heart • Decreased heart rate and blood pressure • Increased blood flow to all body parts • Improved venous return • Increased circulating fibrinolysin (substance that breaksup small clots)

Benefits of Exercise

• Increases efficiency of metabolism • Improves appetite, digestion, and elimination Increases renal blood flow (Fluid balance, Acid-base balance) • Improve skin health • Feel better(General well being, Sleep better, Better body image)

What are hand roll used for. Which pt usually use hand rolls?

It used to prevent hand contraction. Pt who are paralyzed or unconscious uses hand rolls.

Can nurses use pneumatic compression devices w/o the provider's order? Who is it usually prescribed to?

NO! It requires a prescriber's order & prescribed for high-risk surgical pts (i.e., immobility, chronic venous disease, & pts @ risk for deep vein disorders).

trapeze bar

allows the client to pull with the upper extremities to raise the trunk off the bed, assist in transfer, or to perform exercises

Which pts use graduated compression stockings and why it helps them?

- Used for patients at risk for deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and to help prevent phlebitis - It helps them to increase the velocity of blood flow in the superficial & deep veins & improve venous valve function in the legs, promoting venous return to the heart

What is the PRIORITY action for nurses when they encounter a pt who is scheduled to ambulate?

- strengthen their quads, glutes, arms, and shoulders to prevent injuries - the nurse has to ask a pt to dangle and inspect pt's s/s, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, tachycardia, and pallor.

Benefits of Exercise to Musculoskeletal System

1) Increased muscle efficiency (strength) and flexibility 2) Increased coordination 3) Reduced bone loss 4) Increased efficiency of nerve impulse transmission

Benefits of Exercise to Respiratory System

1. improved alveolar ventilation 2. decreased work of breathing 3. improved diaphragmatic excursion

Ambulation

The nurse stands on the pt's weaker side & grasps the gait belt. It allow the nurse to assist in ambulating patients who have leg strength, can cooperate, and require minimal assistance.

Utilize principles of ergonomics when appropriate.

erect posture, use longest and strongest muscles of the arms and legs, internal girdle and long midriff to stabilize pelvis, work as closely as possible to object, face the direction of your movement (avoid twisting), use weight of body as a force for pulling or pushing, slide roll push or pull an object when possible, wide base,

Trochanter roll prevents...

external rotation of the hips
