Eph. 4:11-16

gifts of the spirit.

Regeneration

regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God's grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart, wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ." The work of God that gives new life to the one who believes.

Infalibility

To confess that the bible is infallible is to confess that the Scriptures are incapable of teaching any error.

Daniel 7

"... one like a son of man coming on the clouds of heaven to rule [in this case 'son of man' is the one to whom the Ancient of Days gives all glory, power, and dominion] ...."

Repentance

"a change of mind; a turning from sin, accompanied by a turning to God" (see Matthew 18:3; Luke 5:32)

Sanctification

"a setting apart for special use; the process by which God changes the sinner into the image of His Son" (see John 17:17; 1 Thessalonians 4:3) "Sanctification" comes from two Latin words: sanctus which means holy, and ficare which means make. So to sanctify means to make holy.

Remission

"forgiveness; a release from sin" (see Hebrews 9:22)

Iniquity

"sin, evil, or wickedness" (see Psalm 38:18; Isaiah 53:6)

Illumination

"the Holy Spirit's work of providing spiritual insight into God's Word so that His children can know Christ better" (see Ephesians 1:17-18)

Inerrancy

"the Scriptures' lack of error in their original autographs" (see Psalm 19:7). Because God is no liar, his book, the Bible, does not lie. Inerrancy affirms that the perfect God, who inspired the Holy Scriptures, produced a book — the very words of which tell the truth, and nothing but the truth, in all that they teach.

Omnipresence

"the divine quality of being everywhere at the same time" (see Psalm 139:7-12)

Omnipotence

"the divine quality of having all power" (see Jeremiah 32:17)

Omniscience

"the divine quality of possessing all knowledge" (see Psalm 139:4; Matthew 9:4)

Rapture

"the event in which God snatches away all believers from the earth" (see 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:50-54)

Reconciliation

"the process by which God makes peace between Himself and sinful humanity through the atoning work of Christ" (see Romans 5:8; Colossians 1:21-22)

Immutability

"the quality of God that shows Him to be unchanging in who He is" (see Malachi 3:6)

Transfiguration

"the shining forth of divine glory in Jesus Christ in His earthly form" (see Matthew 17:1-8)

Interpretation

"the study of biblical interpretation" (see 2 Timothy 2:15)

Indwelling of Spirit

Views of Millenialism

Amillennialism is the view of last things that holds there will be no Millennium before the end of the world. Until the end there will be a parallel development of both good and evil, God's kingdom and Satan's. After the second coming of Christ at the end of the world there will be a general resurrection and general judgment of all people. Post millennialism is The kingdom is now being extended in the world by preaching the Gospel so that the world will be Christianized for a millennial time after which Christ will return. Pre-millennialism is The second coming of Christ will be followed by the establishing of His kingdom on earth for 1,000 years.

Glorification

Are you like me? Does that hymn about stars in our crown give you the willies? Good! Because in the Bible glorification is always decisively God-centered. God has glory because all his deeds demonstrate his infinite worthiness for praise. We are changed into the likeness of our Savior as we behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. When all things render due praise to God continuously, we will be in glory.

Ascension

Ascension - "the physical, visible departure of the risen Lord Jesus to heaven, ending His earthly ministry" (see Acts 1:9-11)

What is Christ blood signify?

Blood signifies Life

Church Planting - Missions

Church planting is a central part of God's mission to form a new people of God (Ephesians 1:3-14, 1 Peter 2:4-10). Christ loves the church and promised to build it (Matthew 16:18). God grows His church by adding those who are saved (1 Corinthians 3:6, Acts 2:47). God's plan goes beyond rescuing the lost to transforming lives, families and communities (Parable of salt and light — Matthew 5:13-16; of yeast — Matthew 13:33; and ministry of Jesus and apostles). The Great Commission implicitly includes church planting (teaching, baptizing, discipling all nations — Matthew 28:18-20).

Creation/Creator

Creation is everything that exists except God Himself. This includes material as well as immaterial things and time. God is the creator (Heb. 11:3). We are the creatures. The creator/creature distinction must be maintained to properly remain in humble relationship with God. Man is not God, cannot create, nor can mankind help himself by doing good in order to be saved. God alone has the ability to save man.

Predestination

Divine predestination means that God has a purpose that is determined long before it is brought to pass.Ephesians 1:5; "being chosen by God's sovereign determination ahead of time; in matters of salvation, chosen to be conformed to the likeness of God's Son, justified, and glorified" (see Romans 8:29; Ephesians 1:11)

Genesis 12:1-3

Male/Female

God created man in His image and according to His likeness (Gen. 1:26-27).

Biblical Marriage

God designed marriage as a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman for their mutual joy, the good of society, and the procreation of children. Marriage ultimately displays the glory and grace of God by picturing the unbreakable relationship between Christ and his church. Genesis 2 and instructions in Ephesians 5:24

Trinity - H.S

God exists as a unity of three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. "the doctrine that the One God exists in three distinct Persons, three centers of self-consciousness possessing one indivisible essence" (see Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 3:16-17)

Joshua -Theme, Key verse

Adoption

God is a father who graciously adopts believers in Christ into his spiritual family and grants them all the privileges of heirship. Ephesians 1:5

Creation of Humanity

God used the dust from the ground into which He breathed the breath of life.

Sanctification

God's continuing work of grace in the life of the believer. This is Christian growth brought about by the indwelling Holy Spirit in the believer. It is best expressed by Paul in Phil. 1:6, "For I am confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect (continue) it until the day of Christ Jesus." It is important that Christians realize we are not only saved by grace but we also continue in the Christian life by grace. 1 Peter 1:16

immanence

God's immanence or presence within the created order is demonstrated in the coming of the Son of God to Bethlehem's manger. Though high and lifted up, our God is not trapped in isolation from his creatures. Indeed, "He is not far from each one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being." (Acts 17:27, 28)

Transcendance

God's transcendence highlights the eternal qualitative superiority of the Creator to the creatures. Recognition of divine transcendence reminds us that God will forever deserve our worship and obedience because of his exalted majesty. Transcendence also warns against understanding Jesus' friendship with us as chumminess. The suffering servant who saves remains the righteous king who judges.

Holy Spirit

He is God, just as God the Father and God the Son are also God. We speak of them as the Trinity. You ask me to explain the Trinity. Our minds can but dimly grasp these great spiritual facts, because we are finite and God is infinite.

Judegment(s)

He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in histruth" ( Psalm96:13 ). There will be judgment on Israel ( Psalm 50:4 ) andthere will also be judgment on the whole Gentile world ( Psalm 9:8 ; Rom 14:10 ; cf. themagnificent picture of the final judgment in Rev 20:11-15 ).

Deity

His closest disciples, who knew his humanity full well, worshiped him as God (Matthew 28:17) Christ was and is the visible image of the invisible God, containing within Himself the fullness of Deity (Colossians 2:9).

Virgin Birth

Historically, the Christian belief that Jesus was miraculously conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary without sexual union with man ( Matt 1:18-25 ; Luke 1:34-35 )

"I am" statements of Jesus

I am the Bread of Life, I am the Light of the world, I am the gate to the sheep, I am the good shepherd, I am the resurrection and life, I am the Way, the truth and the life and I am the True wine.

Genesis. 1:26-2:25

Image of God.

Foreknowledge

In his omniscience God knows what the future holds both for individuals and for nations. He knows and sees everything in advance and his will is carried out in accord with his plans and purposes.Foreknowledge is closely connected to election and predestination and to God's sovereign rule of his universe.

Kingdom of God

In the Lord's prayer we pray"Your kingdom come" ( Luke 11:2 ), and thekingdom must as a result be future. Jesus' saying that "Not everyone who says to me'Lord, Lord, ' will enter the kingdom of God" must also refer to a future event, for he continues "Many will say to me on that day" ( Matt 7:21-23 ).Jesus' institution of the Last Supper also looks forward to "that day when I [Jesus]drink it anew in the kingdom of God" ( Mark 14:25 ). Otherpassages associate the coming of the kingdom of God with the final judgment ( Matt 5:19-20 ; 8:11-12 ; 25:31-46 ; Luke 13:22-30 ).It cannot be denied therefore that there are numerous passages in the Gospels thatindicate that Jesus understood the kingdom of God to be still future. Thus Christians continue to look longingly toward the blessedhope ( Titus 2:13 ),when the Son of Man will return and bring the kingdom to its consummation. Having tastedof the firstfruits that are already realized, the believer prays all the more earnestly"your kingdom come" ( Matt 6:10 ) and "Maranatha" ( 1Cor 16:22 ; cf. Rev22:20 ).

Pre-existence

In the case of Jesus Christ, His pre-existence means that, before He became a man and walked upon the earth, He was already in existence as the second Person of the triune God. The Bible not only explicitly teaches this doctrine but also implies this fact at various points throughout the Gospels and Epistles. In addition, Jesus' own actions reveal His divine identity and, as a consequence, His pre-existence.Jesus said, "And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began" (John 17:5).Colossions 1:16

Deacons

In the early church, those appointed to serve the poor and needy. Today, an ordained man who assists priests and bishops in carrying out the work of the Church. Acts 6; 1 Tim 3:18

Incommunicable Attributes

Incommunicable attributes of God are unique to Him and are less or not shared by humans. Immutability: The Bible teaches that God is unchangeable &Infinity: God has no beginning or end Psalms 90:2. He is the same yesterday, today and forever Hebrews 13:8

John 17:20-26

Jesus Prays for All Believers

Sinlessness

Jesus lived a sinless life, and it was, therefore, a life of representative sinlessness. Our Lord's obedience stands in the place of His people's sin. His law-keeping is counted as the law-keeping of those who have faith in Him.The writer of Hebrews tells us that He was "holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sinners" (Heb. 7:26, NASB). The apostle Paul boldly asserts that He "knew no sin" (2 Cor. 5:21).

Cross/Crucifixion

Jesus was nailed to a cross--not a stake since in John 20:25; Crucifixion was a means of execution where a person was either nailed and/or tied to a stake, tree, or cross that is suspended above the ground--then left to die.

Local, Global Missions

Local- Church planting is a central part of God's mission to form a new people of God (Ephesians 1:3-14, 1 Peter 2:4-10). Global Missions- The Great Commission implicitly includes church planting (teaching, baptizing, discipling all nations — Matthew 28:18-20). Acts 1:8

Reconciliation

Man in his original creation, by God, was intended to have fellowship with God. But, in the Fall, our first parents chose to disobey God and follow after their own will and desires. This broke the relationship between man and his Creator in such a way that they became enemies (Rom. 5:10). In Christ's death on Calvary, God bridged the broken relationship and brought reconciliation between himself and his creatures. So the Doctrine of Reconciliation teaches us that God has reversed the primary effect of the Fall in the lives of his children.

Missio Dei

Missio Dei is a Latin theological term that can be translated as "Mission of God", it refers to the work of the church as being part of God's work. So the church's mission is a subset of a larger whole mission that is it is both part of God's mission to the world and not the entirety of God's work in the world.

Sacraments

Ordinances are generally understood to be those things Jesus told us to observe with other Christians. Regarding baptism, Matthew 28:18-20 says, "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'" As for communion, also called the Lord's Supper, Luke 22:19 says, "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'" Most churches observe these two practices, but may not necessarily refer to them as ordinances.

The Fall. Original Sin.

Gospel

The Gospel is the good news that we have forgiveness of sins through Jesus."good news" that Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty for our sin so that we might become the children of God through faith alone in Christ alone

Union

The New Testament uses two interchangeable expressions to describe union with Christ: We are in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17; John 15:4, 5, 7; 1 Cor. 15:22; 2 Cor. 12:2; Gal. 3:28; Eph. 1:4, 2:10; Phil. 3:9; 1 Thess. 4:16; 1 John 4:13). The Vine and the Branches

Baptism of Spirit

The baptism of the Spirit does place all believers in the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13), thus all will experience the promise of the Rapture.

Sovereignty

The biblical idea of God's sovereignty includes all that is involved in his kingship and consists of at least three matters: 1) Ownership of everything there is because he created it; 2) authority in that God has absolute right to impose his will on his creatures and creation; 3) control because God is the master of his universe and rules over all that takes place.

Nature of the Church

The church as the body of Christ, therefore, is composed of every individual believer in this present age and is not constituted by membership in a local fellowship nor by subscribing to some creed or organizational arrangement. It is constituted by a work of God in grace in which the individual is taken out of his estate in Adam and placed in Christ, given eternal life, and made one not only with Christ but with all other believers. This unity therefore is not something to be attained, but is that which is already effected. Paul states this dogmatically in Ephesians 4:4: "

Filling of the Spirit

The concept of the Spirit filling people appears fifteen times in the New Testament, four of them before Pentecost. If seems to have a twofold thrust, and its ramifications are very significant in relation to the Christian's life and activity. In short, the fullness of the Spirit is key to producing spirituality in the believer. There seem to be two facets to Spirit filling. The first may be described as a sovereign act of God whereby He possesses someone for special activity. The second facet of Spirit filling may be described as the extensive influence and control of the Spirit in a believer's life. It evidences an abiding state of fullness rather than the specific event. It produces a certain character of life and seems to be a close synonym to spirituality.

Pentecost

The day when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and gave them the power to preach with conviction the message that Jesus is risen and Lord of the universe. Acts 2

First Adam

The first man [Adam] was from the earth, a man of dust;

Sealing of Spirit

The first, 2 Corinthians 1:22, says that God has sealed us and given us the earnest of the Spirit. Ephesians 1:13 adds that we were sealed with the Spirit (tō pneumati) when we believed, and again, that the Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance. Ephesians 4:30 states we were sealed by or with (en) the Spirit until the day of redemption.

What is the importance of High Priest?

The high priest was the supreme religious leader of the Israelites. For this reason, the Hebrew people would go to the high priest in order to know the will of God (Numbers 27:21). The most important duty of the high priest was to conduct the service on the Day of Atonement, the tenth day of the seventh month of every year. Only he was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place behind the veil to stand before God. Having made a sacrifice for himself and for the people, he then brought the blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat, God's "throne" (Leviticus 16:14-15). He did this to make atonement for himself and the people for all their sins committed during the year just ended (Exodus 30:10). It is this particular service that is compared to the ministry of Jesus as our High Priest (Hebrews 9:1-28).

Hell

The just punishment for that sin is death (Romans 6:23). The punishment of the wicked dead in hell is described throughout Scripture as "eternal fire" (Matthew 25:41), "unquenchable fire" (Matthew 3:12), "shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:2), a place where "the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:44-49), a place of "torment" and "fire" (Luke 16:23-24), "everlasting destruction" (2 Thessalonians 1:9), a place where "the smoke of torment rises forever and ever" (Revelation 14:10-11), and a "lake of burning sulfur" where the wicked are "tormented day and night forever and ever" (Revelation 20:10).

Mk 1:14-15

The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"

What do the lampstands in the book of Revelation mean?

The lampstands were symbolic of spiritual light shining out to a spiritually dark world. Churches are supposed to be examples of holiness and so are the pastors, priests, prophets, and God's men and women. Let's be examples of holiness! Let's love our God and tell others about Jesus Christ. That is our mission.

Justification

The legal aspect of salvation whereby God declares those who place their faith in Christ "are not guilty." He even goes beyond the declaration of "not guilty" to the point of declaring the Christian "righteous" before him. Justification is by faith alone in Christ alone.Romans 5:1

Resurrection

The resurrection of Christ is the central point of Christianity. So important was the resurrection for Paul that he hinged both preaching and faith upon its validity. He considered that a Christianity without the resurrection would be empty and meaningless (1 Cor 15:12-19). Indeed, the resurrection for him was the unveiling of God's messianic power in Jesus (Rom 1:4).

Propitiation

The satisfaction of God's violated holiness. propitiation points to the sufficiency of Christ's atoning work on the cross to deliver us from deserved wrath unto undeserved bliss. "satisfaction; the appeasement of God's wrath through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross" (see Romans 3:25; 1 John 4:10)

Parousia

The second coming of Jesus Christ. "Yes, I am coming soon." These last recorded words from the lips of our Lord evoked a grateful response from his servant John — "Amen. Come, Lord Jesus." (Rev. 22:20) Few Christian truths have been embraced so dearly as Christ's promise to return and gather his elect so they might forever be with him.

Eschatology

The study of last things. C.H.D. or "chronic homesickness disorder" has afflicted Christians ever since Jesus promised he would return one day and take them to heaven (John 14:1ff; Phil. 1:23; Heb. 11:14). Eschatology represents the unquenchable thirst to know all that the Bible teaches concerning the end times, such as — Jesus' promised return (Acts 1:11), the millennium (Rev.20), the great tribulation (Matt.24:21), Israel's future (Rom. 11:25-6) and the significance of hope for Christian living (1 Cor. 15:58).

Grace

The unmerited favor of God. Everyone knows this standard definition, but few realize how rich it is. God has the right to send every person who has ever lived or will ever live to hell. That is exactly what we all deserve. But He has chosen, because of His grace, to grant eternal life to those who have faith in Christ and repent of their sin. It is because of his Grace that men can and do believe and repent.

Kenosis/Hypostatic Union

The word "kenosis" (kenosis) has entered theological language from Philippians 2:7, where in the sentence he "emptied himself" the Greek verb is ekenosen. "Kenosis," then, the corresponding noun, has become a technical term for the humiliation of the Son in the incarnation, but in recent years has acquired a still more technical sense, i.e. of the Son's emptying Himself of certain attributes, especially of omniscience. Hypostatic Union is simply the personal union of Jesus's two natures as both God and man.

The Fall

They were still image-bearers but their attitudes and dispositions were radically affected. They were no longer in fellowship with God; when he came to commune with them they hid. They turned from seeking him; they rejected his fellowship. The love-life bond was broken from their side. They had become and realized they were covenant breakers. The phrase regarding their nakedness revealed that they realized they stood guilty before God.

Election

This is God exercising his sovereignty in salvation. The literal meaning of the word is "to choose" and it always applies to God's work. According to the Apostle Paul, it is an act that took place before the world was created (Eph. 1:4).

Providence

This is the outworking of God's sovereignty whereby all events are directed and disposed to bring about the purpose of God. Christians have always believed that God was actively at work in the course of history. Nothing happens just by chance according to God's word. He is the blessed controller (Col. 1:17) of all things with purpose and meaning.

Atonement

This is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ for the sins of those who believe. He died in our place and for our sins. It is God offering the ultimate sacrifice that turns his wrath away from the sinner. Through His death on the cross, Jesus made an actual atonement for the sins of his people, not just a potential atonement.

Sin, effects and extent of

This word is used in several different ways in scripture. Its meaning varies from "missing the mark" — to "ungodliness" — to "rebellion." In all cases, it refers to the condition of human nature that separates us from a holy God at birth. It holds mankind in bondage until it is broken by the power of God in regeneration. Often confusion is made between "sin" and "sins." It must be remembered that "sins" are an outworking of what dwells within — "sin." We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.
