Physics test-parts of the ear
Auditory nerve
A bundle of nerve fibers which carry electrical pulses between the cochlea and the brain
Oval window
A membrane covering the entrance to the cochlea, it amplifies the sound waves before moving on to the inner ear
Cochlea
A snail like structure, it transforms sound waves into electrical pulses which are sent to the brain
Stapes
A stirrup shaped bone, it conveys sound vibrations from the incus to the oval window
Ear drum (tympanic membrane)
A thin flap of skin that is stretched tight like a drum and vibrates when sound hits it, sending vibrations to the chain of bones in the middle
Middle ear
Part of the ear between the ear canal and oval window
Pinna
The external part of the ear. It acts like a funnel to direct noise into the ear
Inner ear
The innermost part of the ear, it changes vibrations into nerve pulses, (transduction)
Incus
The middle of the 3 bones that form the ossicles, the incus transmits vibrations form the malleus to the stapes
Malleus
The most lateral of the ossicles, it receive vibrations from then tympanic membrane and transmits them to the incus
Outer ear
The part of yournear that is outside skull. it directs waves towards the eardrum
Ear canal
The space between the outside of the ear and the ear drum, it transmits sound waves to the inner ear
