What is the difference between report, dataset, and dashboard?

A report is a collection of visualizations that appear together on one or more pages. In Power BI, a report is a collection of items that are related to one another. A dataset is a collection of data that Power BI uses to create its visualizations. a Power BI dashboard is a collection of visuals from a single page that you can share with others. Often, it's a selected group of visuals that provide quick insight into the data or story you're trying to present.

What is a calculated column in Power BI and how would you use them?

Calculated columns use Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) formulas to define a column's values, anything from putting together text values from a couple of different columns to calculating a numeric value from other values. For example, let's say your data has City and State fields, but you want a single Location field that has both, like "Miami, FL". This is precisely what calculated columns are for. Calculated columns are similar to measures in that both are based on DAX formulas, but they differ in how they are used. You often use measures in a visualization's Values area, to calculate results based on other fields. You use calculated columns as new Fields in the rows, axes, legends, and group areas of visualizations. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-tutorial-create-calculated-columns

What is Power Pivot Data Model?

In Excel 2013, Microsoft introduced the Excel Data Model, to let you load many tables and link them through relationships, giving users the capability to create powerful data models. What is a data model? A data model is just a set of tables linked by relationships. A single-table model is already a data model, although not a very interesting one. As soon as you have multiple tables, the presence of relationships makes the model much more powerful and interesting to analyze. Building a data model becomes natural as soon as you load more than one table. Moreover, you typically load data from databases handled by professionals who created the data model for you. This means your data model will likely mimic the one that already exists in the source database. In this respect, your work is somewhat simplified. https://www.safaribooksonline.com/library/view/analyzing-data-with/9781509302833/ch01.html

Which language is used in Power Query?

Introduction to Power Query (informally known as "M") Formula Language The Power Query Formula Language is a powerful query language optimized for building queries that mashup data. It's a functional, case sensitive language similar to F#, which can be used with Power Query in Excel, Get & Transform in Excel 2016, and Power BI Desktop. To learn more, see the PowerQueryName reference. For computer language theorists: Power Query is a mostly pure, higher-order, dynamically typed, partially lazy, functional language. You can create a variety of data mashup queries from simple to advanced. As with any programming language, you will need some intermediate programming experience for more advanced scenarios. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt270235.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

What is Power BI Designer?

Power BI Designer allows the user to create reports and publish them. It merges the tools of Power Query, Power Pivot, Power View and build Power BI elements and publish them into the cloud. However, this has been replaced by Power BI Desktop by 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CxpQb6S40I

What is Power Pivot?

Power Pivot is an Excel add-in you can use to perform powerful data analysis and create sophisticated data models. With Power Pivot, you can mash up large volumes of data from various sources, perform information analysis rapidly, and share insights easily. In both Excel and in Power Pivot, you can create a Data Model, a collection of tables with relationships. The data model you see in a workbook in Excel is the same data model you see in the Power Pivot window. Any data you import into Excel is available in Power Pivot, and vice versa. Power Pivot has been available in Excel since Excel 2010 as an external add-in, and it has been included as part of the product since Excel 2013. Starting in Excel 2016, Microsoft began using a new name to describe a Power Pivot model: Excel Data Model. However, the term Power Pivot is still used, too. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Power-Pivot-Powerful-data-analysis-and-data-modeling-in-Excel-A9C2C6E2-CC49-4976-A7D7-40896795D045

What are the data destinations of Power Query?

Power Query gives you two choices for where the output of a query will be loaded: a table in a worksheet or the Excel Data Model. If you want to load data from Power Query directly to an Excel worksheet, you have two options: use the built-in Load to worksheet functionality or create your own tables in Excel and connect them to Power Query. Once you have loaded the output of a query to the Excel Data Model using the Load to Data Model option in the Query Editor, you can see that table either through the Existing Connections dialog or by opening the Power Pivot window, if you have the Power Pivot add-in enabled.

What is DAX?

The Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) language is a formula language for Power Pivot, Power BI Desktop, and Tabular modeling in SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), which allows users to define custom calculations in PowerPivot tables (calculated columns) and in Excel PivotTables (measures). DAX includes some of the functions that are used in Excel formulas, and it includes additional functions that are designed to work with relational data and perform dynamic aggregation. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/677.power-bi-data-analysis-expressions-dax-language.aspx

What are the building blocks in Power BI?

The basic building blocks in Power BI are the following: Visualizations Datasets Reports Dashboards Tiles A visualization (sometimes also referred to as a visual) is a visual representation of data, such as a chart, a graph, a color-coded map, or other interesting things you can create to represent your data visually. A dataset is a collection of data that Power BI uses to create its visualizations. A report is a collection of visualizations that appear together on one or more pages. In Power BI, a report is a collection of items that are related to one another. a Power BI dashboard is a collection of visuals from a single page that you can share with others. Often, it's a selected group of visuals that provide quick insight into the data or story you're trying to present. a tile is a single visualization found in a report or on a dashboard. It's the rectangular box that contains each individual visual. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guided-learning/gettingstarted?tutorial-step=3

What is Power Bi Q&A?

Use Q&A to explore your data using intuitive, natural language capabilities and receive answers in the form of charts and graphs. Q&A is different from a search engine -- Q&A only provides results about the data in Power BI. Power BI Q&A only supports answering natural language queries asked in English. There is a preview available for Spanish that can be enabled by your Power BI administrator. Power BI Q&A is available with a Pro or Premium license. You'll find Q&A on dashboards in Power BI service, at the bottom of the dashboard in Power BI mobile, and above the visualization in Power BI Embedded. Unless the designer has given you edit permissions, you'll be able to use Q&A to explore data but won't be able to save any visualizations created with Q&A.
