Slide #3: Synbiotics and Probiotics

*Prebiotics* •Prebiotics is the *main food supply* for the beneficial bacteria added into the body by probiotics. •Prebiotics can *improve nutrient absorption and promote regular bowl movement* Some examples are healthy foods such as bananas, apples, and carrots.

Food Examples: Sourdough Bread

*Sourdough Bread* When sourdough is fermented, the bread contains live yeast cultures. Sourdough bread is not like most breads and does not contain gluten. It is useful for people who have celiac disease and cannot break down gluten in the body because they are gluten sensitive With this addition of live cultures, consuming sourdough bread can be beneficial to your gut health in small quantities because it still causes weight gain and has a large amount of carb content since it is bread.

Slide #3: Synbiotics and Probiotics

*Synbiotics* •Synbiotics is an ingredient and dietary supplement that contains BOTH probiotics and prebiotics. •When taking probiotics, the "good" bacteria added can sometimes get stuck or transported to different parts of the body --This is not harmful to the body but will not be used effectively rather then going to the correct location in the body. •With the use of Synbiotics, it makes the job easier for the probiotics to transport to the gut and maintain healthy gut functioning

Food Examples: Yogurt

*Yogurt* and *cottage cheese* yogurt and cottage cheese both aide in digestion and help people with immune system deficiencies Everyone knows that yogurt contains probiotics. Both yogurt and cottage cheese contain live active cultures because they are are fermented dairy products. The probiotics from the cottage cheese can help *break down food and improve gut functioning, and be an aid to digestion*

SLIDE #2: Probiotics in food:

Majority of the foods that contain probiotics are fermented dairy products but some are soy-based, for example: tofu

SLIDE #1: What is a Probiotic:

Probiotics can be in the form of a dietary supplement or found in foods that contain probiotics. These Probiotics are living bacteria (microorganisms)that enter the body through the diary supplement or food containing probiotics Probiotics are naturally found in the intestines. Main goal: maintain a healthy balance by destroying the "bad" bacteria in the body and replacing it with "helpful" bacteria.
