Invasion of privacy and confidentiality are of critical legal and medical concern. The right to privacy means that a client has a right to expect that their property will be left alone. Healthcare individuals may be charged with trespassing, illegal search and seizure, or releasing private information (even if the information is true). (pg 35)

Brain death:

Irreversible cessation of neurological function of the entire brain, including brain stem; no response stimuli. To meet criteria: cessation of breathing for more than 3 minutes after ventilation is removed, cessation of heartbeat without external stimuli, lack of response to any external stimuli, all functions of the brain cease to function. LIFE SUSTAINING TREATMENT CAN BE USED TO KEEP IN VEGETATIVE STATE.

Short term goal

Usually 6 months to 2 years. Short-term goals help you reach your immediate goals. Ex: if your intermediate goals include obtaining a degree or certificate, it may be helpful to have several short-term goals every semester.

Wound care, Family practice, marriage/family, Geriatrics, nurse practitioner, emergency specialist, pediatrics, community health, psychiatric mental health

Refusal of care:

a patient has a right to refuse care, refused life saving treatment against doctors advice

Right to Confidentiality

all medical records and related information is to be kept confidential. If any files are left out, or even computers left open with the clients personal information, this could be reason enough for a breach of confidentiality lawsuit. (pg 35)

Long term goals

educational or career goals. They are things you hope to accomplish in the next 5 to 10 years. Such goals may include completing a new degree, reaching a specific job or career level, or even purchasing a new home. (pg 15)

Immediate Goals

goals that you want to accomplish today, this week, or or this month. These goals are small tasks that can usually be completed quite quickly.Your immediate goals should help you reach your short term goals.

Negligence:

harm done to a client due to reckless behavior. Ex. The nurse didn't raise the side rails, so the patient fell out of bed.

False imprisonment

restraint of movement when unnecessary can be chemical or physical Ex. Using restraints without medical order

The Nurse practice Act

the law that defines and regulates the practice of nursing. Nurses can have their licenses revoked if they are involved in drug or alcohol abuse, fraud, deceptive practices, criminal acts, previous disciplinary action, and gross or ordinary negligence. (pg 38)

Assault

threaten bodily harm, Ex. "if you don't stop talking I will give you the injection anyway".
