When an individual's unconscious ego is threatened by an external source. typically present when individual feels uncomfortable or refuses to discuss a certain topic in therapy ego has built unconscious defenses For a therapist, this means that there is something the individual may fear or be unwilling to confront in their unconscious, which is probably the root of their mental illness; may go about treating the individual's resistance through methods of encouragement and direction toward this unconscious material

really effective with anxiety and depression allows the individual to feely explore themselves in a clinical setting with someone trained to guide them toward unconscious material that may frighten them at first
