According to the lesson materials, why is it important to keep a personal journal? Do you currently keep one, and if so how has it changed your life? D&C 47

According to the lesson materials, we should value the importance of keeping a journal because (1) your journal is an autobiography, (2) your journal is unique, (3) your journal tells family history, (4) your journal tells others how you overcame difficulties, (5) your journal may be quoted by your posterity. I LOVE writing in my journal. In fact, I am passionate about keeping a journal, and I have been ever since December 2007, which is 11 years ago. Thus, I have kept a journal for more than half of my life! I encourage everyone I can to keep a journal because I truly love looking back at my hardships and realizing how my faith was tested but how my testimony grew. I also love reading about my thoughts, even every day thoughts! I make a special effort to focus on big events in my journal. I have written on the days of my hardest times, when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, and I have written on days of my happiest times, getting married. Yes, I wrote a journal entry the day I get married, and yes, I treasure that entry. However, ever since I transferred from Dixie to BYU, I have not been good at keeping a journal because I have so much on my plate. I know that I need to be better at writing in my journal. Maybe I will do that tonight! **I also think writing in a journal helps me to clear my thoughts, gossip less, focus on the eternal perspective, and enjoy life more.

What two reasons did the Lord reveal for revoking a command? (Compare 56:4 with D&C 58:30-33, 101:16, 124:49.) D&C 56

Bishop

Out of the 10 commandments, select 2 that are most profound to you right now and describe how they relate to your life. D&C 42

D&C 42:27 "Thou shalt not speak evil of thy neighbor, nor do him any harm." This scripture is profound in these latter days because gossiping is so easy to do, but so easy not to do if we train ourselves to think more positively about our brothers and sisters here on earth. I think if we remember to strive to see others how Jesus and Heavenly Father see others, we will be able to see the good in others instead of the bad. D&C 42:22 "Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else." I am married to a wonderful individual who makes my life so much better, and I know that if he cleaves to me, and if I cleave to him, I will be blessed.

With everything leading up to this section, why do you think verses 40-41 are so important, both for the Saints then, and us today? D&C 50

Dedicating the building gives the building and all of the landscaping and structures related to the temple site to the Lord. Literally making it His House.

After studying this lesson, why do you believe it is so important for us to become spiritually independent and self-reliant in the Gospel, rather than dependent? D&C 62

Each should have according to his needs.

Ezra Booth

Failing to give thanks to God. Disobeying the commandments.

Sidney Gilbert is a fun guy. He was faithful amidst tribulation and hardship, very smart, and did much for the Church. However, he lacked confidence in his ability to preach, and, according to some reports, he said he "would rather die than go forth to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles" (History of the Church, 2:118). Ironically, he later contracted cholera and died. In verse 2 of this revelation, the Lord commands him to "forsake the world." What does this mean to you, and why is it so important for each of us to "forsake the world?" D&C 53

Forsake the world means being diligent to the commandments of God. Basically joining the Church, and trying to live righteously.

In terms of the spiritual aspect of service, how should Givers give service? How should Receivers receive service? D&C 44

Givers must give out of a righteous heart and a willing spirit Receivers must receive with thankfulness and gladness of heart

How they fulfilled their mission. Their work ethic.

Examine the lesson material, and explain in your own words the important principle Boyd K Packer teaches as commentary on verse 17 in terms of "settling down." D&C 51

I actually had a bishop read this scripture to me in a ward that had members frequently moving in and moving out. He told me to act as if I was staying for years and to "settle down". Because my attitude was focused towards serving and getting to know that ward, I had the most incredible time in that ward because I acted as if I was going to be there forever. Ever since then, in each ward I attend, I try to have this same attitude.

Now that you have identified spiritual gifts you have, select a spiritual gift you don't have, or haven't developed as much as you would like, what you are going to do to better develop this gift? D&C 46

I could make a long list of the spiritual gifts that I do not have or have not developed as much as I would like! Moreover, a gift that I am trying to better improve is patience. I do not like admitting this gift in writing because often when I do that, I am challenged with more opportunities for my patience to be challenged; however, I think recognizing that I can work on this gift will help me to improve my patience. To better develop this gift, I will be a better listener. I will be more interested then interesting in the relationships first with my family, second with my friends, and third with strangers.

How do verses 7-11 help you feel more confident in proclaiming the Gospel? D&C 71

I like the phrase that says, "No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper" because it indicates that the Lord's teachings are more powerful than any obstacle courses.

Important message from Christ! While we are all part of a spiritual gathering, there are things that the Adversary puts in our way to try and stop this gathering from happening. Verses 28-31 discuss the physical and spiritual wars that happen all around us, and includes a vital message from the Lord, "I tell you these things because of your prayers; wherefore, treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear" (vs 30). Notice how He doesn't say wicked men will lie to you, but that they will reveal true things by their wickedness or in other words, with their own, evil agenda. In the space below, explain why this is such an important message for us to understand, and how you have seen this (either in your own life, or your friends/family). With this in mind, what do you think it means "if ye are prepared ye shall not fear?" D&C 38

I like to remember that all good things come from God; contrarily, everything not of good nature comes from Satan. Thus, if we can recognize more frequently the small promptings of the Holy Ghost, we will be able to act on those promptings and see God's hand in our daily lives. If we see God's hand in our lives, we will also be able to recognize when Satan is trying to steer us away from what God would have us do. We are taught that if we are prepared, we shall not fear because if we put God's will before our own, then we will be on the right path.

Verses 2-4 state, "he that is faithful in tribulation, the reward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven. Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation. For after much tribulation come the blessings." When have you experienced this principle, or are you in the middle of experiencing it now? D&C 57

I think I am experiencing this principle right now at BYU. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with the amount of school work I have as an economics major; however, I am thrilled to almost be done with my major and know that after "much tribulation come the blessings," so I know that I will be rewarded because of the knowledge I am learning now.

The lesson states, "Prayer is the catalyst with which we open the door to the Savior." How have you seen this in your own life? D&C 68

In some of my saddest, happiest, angriest, and greatest moments, I have seeked out the Lord in forgiveness, thankfulness, or guidance and have felt the warmth of our Savior's love.

Remember Orson F. Whitney's declaration, "I do not expect the Lord to manifest Himself to me in the same way that He did to Joseph the Prophet. I expect Him to communicate with me through the gifts He has endowed me with, not through those with which He has endowed my brother or sister, unless they have the right to receive for me a message from Him. When the Lord speaks to me or to you, it will be in a method and manner justified by our preparation, our gifts, our powers; for we have all been endowed in some degree." With this in mind, explain how you have seen the Lord through the gifts you have been blessed with. How have you seen the Lord bless other people through you? D&C 50

My husband and I frequently discuss how the Lord communicates to us. For me, the Lord bluntly gives me answers. On the contrary, the Lord often gives my husband a nudge in the right direction but then lets my husband choose from several great choices. I think the better we are at recognizing how the Lord communicates with us, the more opportunities we will be given to put our trust in Him.

The scriptures teach "Signs follow those that believe" (verse 9). Some like to try and mock God by saying "I'll believe it when I see it" when the Lord clearly teaches you'll see it when you believe it. Consider real life examples of why demanding signs first is illogical: 1) "Give me an A, and then I'll turn in my assignments." 2) "Give me the gold medal, and then I'll race." 3) "Give me my paycheck, and then I'll do some work." After reading the lesson material to understand this principle even more, share an example where you learned this principle, that "signs follow those that believe." D&C 63

My husband and I have had great discussions in which we talk about building a strong testimony on faith and not miracles. At first, I told my husband that I thought testimony building experiences where miracles occur is an excellent way for an individual to gain a testimony of the church; however, since then, I have now realized that the best testimony we can have in this church is not miracles based off of miracles, but testimonies based off of faith. I know that if we base our testimony on faith, we will receive blessings, and some individuals will see miracles if that is God's plan for them.

What are some of the incredible benefits of living the Law of Consecration to its fullest? D&C 51

No poor among them. Greater Union. One heart. Equality and accountability. Etc. These are just a few of them.

We know that the Lord is concerned with the spiritual affairs of His members. After studying this lesson, and in your own words, explain why His Church is also concerned with the temporal affairs of its members? D&C 48

Our lives cannot be one-sided, nor can we separate the spiritual from the temporal.... Every phase of our life, therefore, becomes the concern of the Church. The great welfare program of the Church demonstrates this principle. The Church is interested in our social and our recreational needs, educational, family life, our business affairs, and all that we do.

Verses 1-5 and the accompanying lesson material begin teaching about false spirits. What is something new that you learned about the topic? If nothing new, what do you understand better about evil spirits than you did before? D&C 50

Something I liked in the commentary on D&C 50:2-3 says that if we study out the scriptures, we will be blessed with the gift of discernment. I sometimes feel overwhelmed with how much is on my plate, and I have recently been a little doubtful as to why we need to read our scriptures every night. However, this phrase was an answer to my prayers because this blessing is an incredible blessing from reading our scriptures each night!

The lesson begins by saying "Some wonder why the scriptures talk about the last days and why they are important." After studying this lesson, why do you think it is important for the scriptures to discuss the Last Days? D&C 45

The receipt and maintaining of the Keys are conditional upon obedience.

Finish this sentence: "Whenever there is a great outpouring of the Spirit, ____________." D&C 52

There is the opposite from the great liar, Satan.

Verse 3 teaches some very special principles about what happens when we bear our testimonies. What are they? D&C 62

They are recorded for the angels to look at, and they rejoice, and your sins are forgiven you.

During the Millennium, instead of being buried in the ground, what will happen to people who are at the end of their mortality? D&C 63

They will be changed in the twinkling of an eye to immortality.

Verses 2-7 and their commentary teach the principle, "Whenever you see a man rise up claiming to have received direct revelation from the Lord to the Church, independent of the order and channel of the Priesthood, you may set him down as an impostor." Why does this knowledge comfort you in our modern era? D&C 43

This knowledge comforts me in our model era because a lot of individuals these days claim to receive direct revelation from the Lord to the Church, but I find comfort knowing that the gospel has been restored. I know that we have prophets who lead and guide us in today's modern world, and that the voice of the prophet is in one hand with God's.

If you had to summarize the primary purpose of Church Discipline, what would you say? D&C 64

To help individuals go through the repentance process in order to one day come back to Christ.

Verses 11-12 state that, "To every man (and woman) is given a gift." Of the gifts listed in this section, your patriarchal blessing, or even those you have noticed in your everyday life, share at least two of the spiritual gifts that you are grateful to have. D&C 46

Please expound and explain what this excerpt from the lesson means in your own words: "When apostasy comes, it is because the spirit of revelation departs from us. The wire is broken between us and the source of truth. We cannot understand, though truth be spoken, since we are not possessed of the spirit of truth. We misunderstand and misinterpret." D&C 50

When we do not obey God's commandments, then the Holy Ghost cannot dwell within us and the spirit of revelation therefore departs from us. If we do not obey the commandments, we may miss out on opportunities to grow, learn, or serve.
