Numbers (Pentateuch)

Continues the story of the Israelites in the desert until they come to the border of the Promised Land. the book's name comes from 2 censuses detailed in chapters 1 and 26

Jeremiah (prophetic books)

Delivers words of warning and hope to Jews living in Jerusalem prior to the Babylonian Exile, then to Jews living in Egypt during the Exile. he shared the news that god was going to make a covenant with his people

Genesis (Pentateuch)

First eleven chapters contain stories of prehistory: godos creation of the world, Adam and Eve, etc. last chapters relate the story of the patriarchs. the word genesis means beginning.

Deuteronomy(Pentateuch)

Gives the Law to a new generation with special emphasis to those entering the land. means second law. repeats much of the material of the three previous books through sermon attributed to Moses

Ruth

God providentially rewards sacrificial loyalty a short story about Ruth, a gentile, who showed great fidelity to her Jewish mother in law, Naomi shows that god's love extends not only to the chosen people but everyone.

the prophetic books

Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Baruch, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi "God sent prophets to encourage the people of Israel to stay faithful to their covenant with him. A prophet spoke to the People on behalf of God and sometimes spoke to God on behalf of the People. Prophets generally tried to keep kings or the Chosen People in line when they strayed from the covenant with God"

Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom, Sirach "Wisdom literature addresses the ways that God works in individuals' everyday lives."

May be the work of Jeremiah consists of five poems lamenting the fall of Jerusalem

the prophet Micah

Predicts that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem the prophet Micah came from a small country village and prophesied during the reigns of king jotham, ahaz, and hezekiah. his poetic images come from rural life. the first three chapters of Micah condemn the leaders of both the northern kingdom of Judah. Micah offered hope, saying that a ruler would come from Bethlehem to lead Israel to peace and justice. reminds people of god's unending mercy

Baruch (prophetic books)

Serves as a reminder that the Exile occurred because of the people's infidelity to God. probs Jeremiah's scribe

Leviticus (Pentateuch)

Sets forth the laws of worship. third book of Pentateuch. examines the particulars of the law and focuses on holiness in all aspects of life.

Ezra and Nehemiah (Historical books)

Tell the story of the Jews after they return from exile in Babylon.

Exodus (Pentateuch)

Tells how the Egyptian pharaoh enslaved Israel's descendants and how god freed the Israelites from slavery in the great event known as exodus

first and second Samuel (historical books)

Tells of Israel's transition from the judges' leadership to the monarchy.god allowed Samuel to anoint Saul as king while warning the people they will regret having a king Saul disobeyed god, so Samuel then anointed David.

Old Testament

The forty-six books that make up the first part of the Bible and record salvation history before the coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ. centers on the covenant god made with his chosen people reveals god's revelation prior to jesus' coming

Ecclesiastes (wisdom)

a fictional character named qoheleth teaches important lessons about living through questions, sayings, and proverbs.

proverbs (wisdom)

contains short sayings for moral living. educate you how to live a good life.

first and second Maccabees (historical)

give an account of events in the second century BC when various groups tried to suppress Judaism in Palestine, causing a revolt among Jews. a period of Jewish independence followed.

Ezekiel (prophetic books)

god called Ezekiel to be a prophet in Babylon where the Jewish people were in exile. ezekiel Promises salvation and a New Covenant if the Jews returned to God. Often acted his prophecies out dramatically.

Story of Abraham and Sarah

god called them to leave their home. Abraham is a symbol of faith, of one who trusted god totally. he was willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac, to god, though god prevented human sacrifice. Abraham is "the father of a multitude of nations" Christians and Jews consider him the father of their faith.

god does not change. the Bible does not change but humanity does. the Bible's languages, features, media, covers, and prices may change but god's revelation does not change.

Tobit, Judith, and Esther(Historical)

inspiring works of fiction. Tobit is on a romantic quest. Judith conquers a powerful army. Esther saves her people from genocide. the authors wrote these to encourage Jewish people

Before writing, how did people record ideas?

oral tradition. "Oral tradition preserved the history and wisdom of the Chosen People until God inspired authors to record the material in writing. Oral" "In the ancient world, most people had no access to writing implements, and few could read or write. They preserved information in their minds. This is how the Old Testament initially existed. Before the physical writing took place, there was a period of oral tradition. The Chosen People told stories of their religious heritage in order to preserve them and to pass them down to younger generations. These stories and traditions came from the experiences the people had with God and with each other." "Many of the biblical traditions were in story form because it was easier to remember stories.

Song of Songs (wisdom)

poem that celebrates the ideal of romantic love and is an allegory of god's love for his people.

First and Second Chronicles (historical)

retell many of the stories of the first and second books of Samuel and kings but focus primarily on the southern kingdom from the time of king David until the Babylonian conquest of Judah.

sirach (wisdom)

sirach was likely a sage. he recounted many wise lessons and sayings.

Isaiah (prophetic)

spans three centuries with the prophet Isaiah and his disciples addressing different audiences. the book is divided according to prophecies for jerusalem, the exile, the return.

Job (wisdom)

tells the trials of an innocent man and raises the question why bad things happen to good people. teaches god's ways are not human ways.

the Bible contains knowledge, wisdom, and truth. the more you read sacred scripture, the more you discover god's plan for your happiness. a truth is that god is revealing himself to you through the Bible as he did to biblical readers hundreds of years ago, yet he is revealing something new each time

Wisdom (Wisdom books)

written about a hundred years before the coming of Jesus Christ, encouraged Jews living in Egypt to remain faithful to their heritage

proverbs (wisdom)

A collection of wise sayings and instructions. Connects to King Solomon "fear of the lord is the beginning of knowledge" to know god then means that you are humble and know your place before him. king Solomon was famous for being wise. scholars believe he was the author of the second and fifth parts of the books of proverbs proverbs is a poetic book. the authors used parallelism, in which the second line of a couplet restates, contrasts or advances the thought of the first line. parallelism makes it easier for you to remember wise saying. it's purpose is to encourage u to live a virtuous life and avoid sin that leads you astray.

Joshua (Historical books)

A military leader led the Israelites into the Promised Land, conquered it, and divided it among the various tribes.

Accounts of the saving action of God in human history "narrate the events of Salvation History, namely how God remained faithful to the covenant and how the Israelites struggled over time to live according to the Law. The Historical Books cover almost nine hundred years of history from about 1020 BC to 142 BC. Recall that although these books are called the Historical Books, you want to look for religious rather than historical truth in them"

first and second kings (historical books)

After Davids death, his son Solomon took the throne. he built the temple in Jerusalem, but managed his resources poorly. after Solomon died, the kingdom split into two: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.

Daniel (prophetic books)

An apocalyptic text, placed among the prophetic books because Christians initially interpreted it as prophetic literature

when writing began scribes wrote

"The scribes then recorded the stories of the kings. They wrote first about the early kings such as King Saul and King David. These are the historical books"

when did people begin to write down oral tradition

"Historians believe that the Chosen People began to write down their stories during the reign of King Solomon, perhaps around 950 BC. Solomon's court would have been wealthy enough to employ scribes who did the actual writing. Scholars believe that the scribes first wrote down the oral traditions about Israel's history from the creation of the world up to the conquest of Canaan. This material is in the first section of your Bible, the Pentateuch.

Judges (Historical books)

The Israelites fall into the cycle of apostasy. God sends a judge to deliver Israel and to lead the troops
