Reproductive System (parts and functions both male and female)
epididymis (male)
a long, coiled tube that stores sperm and transport it from the testes (appears as a curved structure on the back margin of each testis
seminal fluid
a nutrient rich fluid produced by seminal vesicles, prostate glands, and bulbourethral gland
follicle (female)
cluster of cells that surround an immature egg cell and provide the egg with nutrients
seminiferous tubules (male)
clusters of hundreds of tiny tubules in each testis where sperm develop
penis (male)
copulatory organ that releases urine and sperm
scrotum (male)
has a protective function and acts as a climate control system for the testes
bulbourethral gland
located beneath the prostate gland at the beginning of the internal portion of the penis (they add fluids to semen during the process of ejaculation)
prostate gland (male)
main function is to separate prostate fluid, one of the components of semen (muscles also help propel seminal fluid during ejaculation)
testes (male)
male reproductive organ that descends from the abdomen in an external sac called the scrotum
ovum (female)
mature egg cell; released from ovary when a follicle ruptures
ovulation (female)
monthly release of ovum
vagina (female)
muscular tube that leads from the outside of the body to the uterus; birth canal and sex organ of the female
cervix (female)
opening to the uterus that can dilate during childbirth
ovaries (female)
primary female reproductive structure; produce gametes and sex hormones; contains follicles, each containing an immature egg--> oocyte
seminal vesicle (male)
produces a nutrient rich fluid called seminal fluid (holds liquid that mixes with sperm to form semen
Fallopian Tubes (females)
slender ducts through which ova pass from the ovaries to the uterus; moves eggs from normal site of fertilization
semen
sperm+seminal fluid
urethra (female and male)
the duct by which urine is conveyed out of the body from the bladder, and which in males also conveys semen
vas deferens (male)
the duct that conveys sperm from the testicle to the urethra
uterus (female)
thick-walled, hollow, muscular organ; normal site of implantation and fetal development
endometrium (female)
uterine lining; tissue lining the inner cavity of the uterus
