• Son of Charles Martel • Inherited the mayor ship in 751 • Got permission from pope- depose the kings, become the king- starts a new dynasty called the Carolingian Dynasty • Pope needed help (protection) o Lombards were threatening Rome • Pippin helped, Pope crowned him king • Gave religious unity
