Scout Handshake

Used with the hand nearest to your heart (left) as a token of friendship. Also, by using your left hand you make yourself more vulnerable (because that is the hand you shield with) showing the recipient your trust.

Scout Sign

- Each finger represents an aspect of the scout promise 1) Honor God and Country 2) Help Others 3) Obey the Scout Law - The scout sign is used when repeating the scout law and oath or when a designated leader is using it.

4 Steps of Scout Advancement

1. The Boy Scout learns. "A Scout learns by doing. As he learns, he grows in ability to do his part as a member of the patrol and the troop. As he develops knowledge and skill, he is asked to teach others; and in this way he begins to develop leadership." 2. The Boy Scout is tested. "A Scout may be tested on rank requirements by his patrol leader, Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmaster, a troop committee member, or a member of his troop. The Scoutmaster maintains a list of those qualified to give tests and to pass candidates. The Scout's merit badge counselor teaches and tests on the requirements for merit badges." 3. The Boy Scout is reviewed. "After a Scout has completed all requirements for a rank, he has a board of review. For Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle Palms, the review is conducted by members of the troop committee. The Eagle Scout board of review is conducted in accordance with local council procedures." 4. The Boy Scout is recognized. "When the board of review has certified a boy's advancement, he deserves to receive recognition as soon as possible. This should be done at a ceremony at the next troop meeting. The certificate for his new rank may be presented later at a formal court of honor.

Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Meaning: A Scout is Trustworthy A Scout tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct. People can depend on him. A Scout is Loyal A Scout is true to his family, Scout leaders, friends, school, and nation. A Scout is Helpful A Scout is concerned about other people. He does things willingly for others without pay or reward. A Scout is Friendly A Scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Scouts. He seeks to understand others. He respects those with ideas and customs other than his own. A Scout is Courteous A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows good manners make it easier for people to get along together. A Scout is Kind A Scout understands there is strength in being gentle. He treats others as he wants to be treated. He does not hurt or kill harmless things without reason. A Scout is Obedient A Scout follows the rules of his family, school, and troop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them. A Scout is Cheerful A Scout looks for the bright side of things. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy. A Scout is Thrifty A Scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for unforeseen needs. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property. A Scout is Brave A Scout can face danger even if he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten him. A Scout is Clean A Scout keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He goes around with those who believe in living by these same ideals. He helps keep his home and community clean. A Scout is Reverent A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others.

The Outdoor Code

As an American, I will do my best to: Be clean in my outdoor manners. Be careful with fire. Be considerate in the outdoors. Be conservation minded. Meaning: This was introduced in recognition of the importance of our relationship with nature and our responsibility to be conservationists. Conservation is the responsible stewardship of the environment to preserve natural ecosystems

Scout Motto

Be Prepared Meaning: It is essential that a Scout is prepared because if any accident or emergency occurs it is important for a scout to react and not be surprised.

Scout Spirit

By living through the scout law, oath, slogan, and motto within your daily life you demonstrate Scout Spirit. Having Scout Spirit aids you in being a good role model to your peers and also helps you to become a better scout/person.

Scout Slogan

Do a good turn daily Meaning: This does not mean that you should do just one Good Turn during the day and then stop. It means you should always be looking for extra opportunities to help others by doing a good turn. Also, On rank patches, the scroll is turned upwards into the shape of a smile to remind Scout to do a good turn cheerfully.

Meaning: A promise to be loyal to our country no matter what

Scout Oath

On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Meaning: a pledge to help others, your community, nation, world, and yourself under God.

First Class Scout Badge

Shape: the three-point design of the top half is like the north point of an old sailor's compass. This shows that a Scout is able to point the right way in life as truly as the compass points it in the field Three Points: The three points of the trefoil are like the three fingers used in the Scout sign. They stand for the three parts of the Scout Oath: duty to God & country; duty to others; duty to yourself Eagle and Shield: The eagle and shield, national emblem of the US, stand for freedom and a Scouter's readiness to defend that freedom Two Stars: The two stars stand for truth and knowledge of the Scouting movement. They guide you by night and suggest a Scout's outdoor life Scroll: The scroll is turned up at the ends to remind us of the corners of a Scout's mouth raised in a smile as he does his duty. Scout Salute

The Scout Salute is given to show respect to the United States Flag, you may also use it towards a Scout Leader or Fellow Scout.
