Self Awareness-Johari Window
Johari Quadrant 2:
'blind self' Known about a person by others but unknown by the person him/herself Aim: Reduce this area to inc. open area (seek/solicit feedback from others) -ignorance about one self -issues someone is deliberately holding from a person
Johari Quadrant 4
'unknown self' -unknown to person him/herself & unknown to group -untried ability, unknown fear, illness, etc.
Johari 3-'hidden self'
-known to ourselves & unknown to others -typically much of hidden info isn't very personal & is better positioned in the open area -through disclosure: expose relevant info & feelings 'self-disclosure' & 'exposure process'
Johari Window's 4 regions:
1) What is known by the person about him/herself & is also known by others -open area, open self 2) what is unknown by the person about him/herself, but which others know-blind area 3) what the person nows about him/herself that others do not now-hidden area, hidden self 4) what is unknown by the person about him/herself & is also unknown by others -unknown area or unknown self
Increasing area through feedback soliciation
Greater open area, reduce blind area, achieved through process of a skiing for & receiving feedback -feedback develops open area & reduces blind area -also open area developed through disclosure
What is the Johari Window?
Model for understanding and training self-awareness, personal development, improving communications, interpersonal relationships, group dynamics, team development, & inter-group relationships -disclosure/feedback model of self-awareness -info processing tool
What's the most effective way to optimize the value to people?
Simply helping people to understand
Johari Quadrant 1:
known by the person, known by the group Aim of group: develop the 'open area' for every person -good communication, cooperation Feedback solicitation: size of open area expanded horizontally into blind space by seeking and actively listening to feedback from other group members -can also expand open area by offering feedback
