Ten Characteristics of a Servant Leader

SFC(P)BLEACH: Stewardship, Foresight, Conceptualization, Persuasion, Builds Community, Listening, Empathy, Awareness, Commitment to Growth of Others, Healing.

Building Community

Seek to identify some means for building among those who work within the institution.

Persuasion

Seeks to convince others; effective at building consensus in the group.

Stewardship

Assumes first and foremost a commitment to serving the needs of others.

Awareness

Helps one understand issues involving ethics, power, and values.

Listening

Listens receptively to what is being said and unsaid.

Servant Leadership Defined

Servant leadership seeks to involve others in decision-making, is strongly based in ethical and caring behavior, and enhances the growth of workers while improving the caring and quality of organizational life.

Empathy

Strives to understand and empathize with others.

Conceptualization

The ability to stretch his/her thinking to encompass boarder-based conceptual thinking.

Foresight

To understand the lessons from the past, the realities of the present and likely consequences of a decision for the future.
