1. The psychopathic abuser is generally violent, impulsive, and lacks empathy and remorse 2. The hostile/controlling abuser is suspicious, hypersensitive to receiving criticism, holds grudges, feels misunderstood, and has a few friends. He is a controlling person who, instead of taking responsibility for his actions, blames in the attacks his partner 3. The borderline/dependent abuser is unhappy, depressed, and prone to emotions that spiral out of control. This abuser suffers from deep fears of abandonment and lashes out at the person who loves and needs the most

Intimate partner violence refers to actual or threatened violence crimes committed against individuals by the current or former spouses, cohabiting partners, boyfriends, or girlfriends. 1. Common couple violence refers to occasional acts of violence arising from argument that get out of hand 2. Intimate terrorism is motivated by a wish to control one's partner and involves not only violence but also economics subordinance, threats, isolation, verbal and emotional abuse, and other control tactics 3. Violent resistance refers to acts of violence that are committed in self-defense 4. Mutual violence control is a rare pattern of abuse that can be viewed as two intimate terrorists battling for control

The US census bureau defines family as a group of two or more people related by blood, marriage, or adoption where as sociology offers a broader definition of family: a family is a kinship of all relatives living together or recognized as a social unit including adopted people. This broader definition recognize this foster families, unmarried same-sex an opposite sex couples with or without children, and any relationships that function and feel like a family.

The negative effects it has on children, adults, and larger society is considered problematic. Divorce is linked to the following social and cultural factors: changing function of marriage, increased economic autonomy of women, increased work demands and economic stress, any quality of marital division of labor, no-fault divorce laws, increased individualism, weak social ties, and longer life expectancy.
