He set a trap by sending a message that he was going to switch sides. King Xerxes fell for it allowing his navy to be surrounded by the Greeks. 300 Persian to Xerxes.

Xerxes large army crossed the Hellespont and marched to Greece. Athens used it's navy to fight the Persians at sea. Sparta attempted to stop the Persian army, but a Greek traitor showed the Persians a secret route that allowed the Persians to surround the Spartans. All of the Spartan soldiers were killed.
