solubility

a measure of how much solute can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature

colloid

a mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out; scatters light

suspension

a mixture in which particles can be seen and easily sperated by settling or filtration; a suspension does not have the same properties throughout

dilute solution

a mixture that has only a little solute dissolved in a certain amount of solvent

precipitate

a solid that forms from solution during a chemical reaction; excess solute comes out of the solution

soluble

a substance that can be dissolved in another

insoluble

a substance that cannot be dissolved in another

concentrated solution

has a lot of solute dissolved in the solvent

solution

has the same properties throughout; contains solute particles that are too small to see

mixture

made of two or mor substances- elements, compounds, or both- that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined

ways to increase rate of dissolving

solid to liquid- stir, heat it up, crush it/gas to liquid- cool, increase pressure

solvent

the part of a solution present in the largest amount; dissolves the other substances

solute

the substance present in a solution in a smaller amount; dissolved by the solvent

homogeneous mixture

the substances are so evenly mixed that you can't see the different parts

dissolve

to break up into particles too samll to see with the naked eye

saturated solution

when you've added so much solute that no more dissolves

unsaturated solution

you can continue to dissolve more solute

heterogeneous mixture

you can see the different parts of the mixture
