Stars and Solar System GM
Milky Way
The galaxy we live in.
telescope
a tool used to magnify an object so it looks closer.
earth orbits
the sun
Star
A very large sphere of gas. They are so large they are held together by their own gravity. They are the largest objects in any solar system. They are the center of every solar system. They can be many different sizes.
The Outer planets are
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
the order of the planets from from the sun moving outward
M V E M J S U N ( My Very eager Mother Just Served us Nachos) Mercury , Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
The inner planets are
Mercury Venus, earth, and Mars
earth orbits a star named
the a yellow sun, and it is small compared to other stars.
satellite
an object that orbits a planet. They can also be objects made by humans like the Hubble telescope. It can also be a naturally made object that orbit a planet like the moon.
Inner planets
are composed of rocks, orbit the sun and have few moons. They do not have ring systems.
Outer planets
are farther from the sun. Are known as the gas planets, mostly made up of gases and liquids, have rings on each planet.
galaxies
are groups of billions and billions of stars and solar systems. Our solar system is located in the galaxy called the Milky Way.
the yellow stars (like our sun) are
between hot and cool star
the hottest stars are
blue stars
Stars are described in size and temperature by their
color
Big Dipper
constellation that looks like a ladle (cup) used to dip into liquid.
moon orbits
earth
New Moon
earth is between earth and the sun.
day and night cycles
earth revolves around the sun it rotates in its Axis which creates day and night. Earth rotates from West to East.
orbit
is a path that one object takes around another object. Earth orbits the sun, The moon orbits the earth.
universe
is composed of all galaxies. The solar systems, planets, and all other objects that make them up. Everything from the smallest to the largest objects if part of the universe.
solar system
is made up of the sun and all the objects that orbit the sun. The largest objects that orbit the sun are the inner planets and they are all composed of rock. They have a few moons. They do not have ring systems and orbit the plant.
tilt of the earths axis
it is the line in the middle of the earth that is towards away from the sun. Light from the sun warms the earth. When the northern half is receives more light it is tilted toward the sun.
the coolest stars are the
red stars
phases of the moon
refers to how much of the moon we can see that is lit and visible to earth.
rotation
the movement around a central axis. A spinning top for example.
revolution
the movement of around another object. Planets revolve around the sun.
constellation
the pattern a group of stars makes as seen from earth. the stars that form the constellations are NOT connected by gravity. They are often named by the object they look like.
