Intermembrane space

the fluid filled space between the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes.

Stroma

The fluid of the chloroplast surrounding the thylakoid membrane; involved in the synthesis of organic molecules from carbon dioxide and water.

Lamella

act as a type of wall at which chloroplasts can be fixed within, achieving the most light possible.

Lumen

compartment where molecular oxygen is produced from water during photosynthetic light-dependent reactions.

Outer Membrane

forms a boundary between mitochondrion and cytoplasm; helps define the inner membrane space.

Inner Membrane

regulates passage of materials in and out of the chloroplast.

Thylakoid (4 in the picture)

a flattened membrane sac inside the chloroplast, used to convert light energy into chemical energy.

Granum (plural = Grana)

A stack of thylakoids in a chloroplast
