Peer Reviewed Literature Review

A literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and sometimes information in a particular subject area within a certain time period. A literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature review may evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant.

Meta-Analysis

A quantitative method for identifying patterns in findings across multiple studies of the same research question. Unlike traditional literature review, which describes previous research verbally, meta analysis treat previous studies as cases whose features are measured as variables and then analyzed statistically. (179) Meta-analysis is a statistical technique for combining data from multiple studies on a particular topic.

Peer Reviewed Empirical Article

Empirical Research is defined as research based on observed and measured phenomena. It is research that derives knowledge from actual experience rather than from theory or belief.

News Report

News reports are found in newspapers and their purpose is to inform readers of what is happening in the world around them. News reports have a certain structure that you need to follow. This structure is sometimes called the Inverted Pyramid .

Primary Citation

Primary sources are first-hand, authoritative accounts of an event, topic, or historical time period. They are typically produced at the time of the event by a person who experienced it, but can also be made later on in the form of personal memoirs or oral histories.

secondary source citation

Secondary sources often are defined in contrast to primary sources. In a primary source, an author shares his or her original research—whether it be case study findings, experiment results, interview materials, or clinical observations. However, in a secondary source, an author focuses on presenting other scholars' research, such as in a literature review. When trying to distinguish between a primary and secondary source, it is important to ask yourself: Who originally made the discoveries or brought the conclusions in this document to light? Did the author conduct the study his or herself? Or is the author recounting the work of other authors?

Peer Reviewed Empirical Article via Secondary Source

The method of using preexisting data in a different way or to answer a different research question than intended by those who collected the data. It is previously collected data that's used in a new analysis. Common sources are surveys collected by government agencies, often with survey research methods.
